I got one of Pat Allen's diagnostic units and it gives a better rpm reading than the tach.  Easy dwell reading as well.

 

You have electronic ignition, right?  If so forget about the dwell.  I will say a low dwell reading, hence incorrect point gap can give you all kinds of grief.

yes, it has a fireball ignition on it, I know that I am probably just saying this to reasure myself, but it really runs well once it is on, has lots of power and the idle is quite steady
