Automatic transmission filter

I'm gathering parts for a major refresh on my car before Mid America. I had planned on dropping the pan and replacing the gasket and flushing the transmission, but have been debating what to do about the filter.

So in looking for the part i've found two wildly different prices, and the pictures look a bit different. I could either go with one from Bav auto for 98 bucks, or one from ebay for 20. Part number 24 31 1 201 102

Question is, should i trust the $20 ebay part or bite the bullet and spend 100 bucks. OR should i just leave it alone for fear of rocking the boat and causing a more major problem before a 2500 mile trip?

Thanks!

I have not eyeballed one of these in a long time but it looks like those are top and bottom views of the same filter.   Hard to determine quality from afar, but it would not surprise me to learn that they are both from the same maker.

That was my suspicion. I mean, how many manufactures could there be for this part?

Having been in manufacturing for nearly 30 yrs, I can tell you there are at least two: the OEM, and a Chinese copycat.

Not that one is necssarily better than the other, but I'd go with a Genuine BMW part on this. BavAuto doesn't always tell you who the manufacturer is, so I'd call them if you decide to go there. Or shop around some more. ECS has it for $76.40, Genuine BMW part. and getbmwparts.com has it for $78.17.

Just my thoughts on this.

A manufacturer's imprimator is generally a good indication of quality.  But   -  with the reality of globalization, even the so-called genuine part might not be all that you might expect.
