steering and suspension Spring Pads - Upper And Lower

All, I searched the archives but cannot locate a suitable answer, so here it goes:

• are the rear spring pads, upper and lower, interchangeable (top to bottom)?
• do they need to match top and bottom (1 dot, 2 dot, etc)?
• is it best to replace them when they are dried out and hardened?
• can you replace the lowers and not the uppers and vice versa?
• are new spring pads still manufactured

I look at it this way - while putting in new stock rear springs in my NK I replaced both upper and lower pads and now I will never, ever have to think about them again.
