2002 Touring Buying Advice

Recommended Posts

The touring bodies are different from the base of the A pillar back. Sorry Bill, but the roofs are TALLER and longer than the sedan. So all the glass is specific to tourings. Also both windshield wipers are different to clean a larger swath of the windshield. Standard 02 wipers work the just leave a lot of the windshield not cleaned. I think most everyone else here has chimed in with good points. In the rear area check where the bracing at the trunk floor meets the inner fenders (the angle brackets by the tool kit in the pictures bill attached) they have a tendency to crack here/ also lift the carpet to check the inner fenders. I would second making sure you have ALL the interior parts for the folding rear seats and the trunk area. Hopefully the current owner hasn't started the resto process and the car is complete. Good luck with it!

The sedan's unladen height is 55.5", per the 3/74 2002 Owner's Handbook

The Touring's unladen height is 54.2", per the 5/73 2002 Touring Supplement Owner's Handbook.

Mike, Just one of those things I was not aware was wrong and how to finish. Do you have a photo of how those flaps should be finished?

Bill, the vinyl should be trimmed and glued to the top of the cross-brace.

Tomorrow, I can take a pic of my Touring, unless someone posts a better pic.

This is the best I can find at the moment.

Bill

Here is one of ours before I changed the carpet out to the new one by Esty    Pretty sure it was the original carpet because as you recall mine was really worn   I may have some more somewhere if you need it

Just to clarify a bit on Les' observations/statistics.    Touring roof profile is lower and flatter from the rain gutter up resulting in the lower overall profile dimension.   But I am pretty sure the side glass is slightly longer in height.   The windshield is much longer too hence the longer wiper arms as mentioned by Martin

I better stop answering touring questions     I was kicked out of the club   :)

Have fun in Saratoga   Say hi to the family

Thanks les and mike. If you have other photos of how it should look, post them or send them please. I will take care of it soon.

Bill,

Here's a couple of my Touring. Somewhat tatty, but original.

Just a small update, my dad bought the car but it is a sorry state. Rust and holes everywhere but everything seems to be accounted for.

The car is a 73 model (vin: 3460938) but it has model 71 trim (alu grills, etc).

I also went and measured the differences just for interest sake. All measurement were taken at the B-pillar for repeat-ability.

Also the measurements were done with a measuring tape (in mm) and a spirit level, but assume about 5 mm of error.

The vent window seems to be exactly the same if you complete the triangle from the top edge to the bottom.

The windows are the same height. The big changes are to the windshield and roof profile.

Regards

Jacques

Ok, here are some pictures. I will have to fab a lot of sheet metal to fix the rust, but the previous owner said he can help with that.

Just loaded up..

A picture of the seats that came with the car. They are in a remarkable condition considering the condition of the rest of the car. I cleaned up the one on the right last night.
