Bolts Used On An Engine Stand?

HI,

I'm about to put my engine on the stand and was wondering what grade of bolts should I use.  I have 8.8 bolts but through my search I get conflicting opinions.  Some say only use 10.9 bolts and others are fine with 8.8.  I just don't want the engine to dent my garage floor or worse.

I plan on using the side of the motor to attach to the stand.

Happy New Year!

If you're going to the side, you're using m10's and probably 3 of them?  Modified stock motor mount?

8.8 is fine.  The mount will be the weak part.

Yah, I'd say theres nothing wrong with using an 8.8. I hold up a whole turbo diesel engine for my truck on my stand from the tail with grade 5's I think. Maybe their 8.8... But you should be fine!

Thanks for the input, I was almost certain that 8.8 would work but wanted a second opinion.  The only other motor I have pulled was out of a VW Bug and it sat on a block of wood, no stand needed.

Grade 5 bolts???  I wish I was that brave... :D

At the risk of scaring you...

Grade 8.8 is the 'metric' version of the US Grade 5 bolt.  Hardened bolts are Grade 10.9 ('metric') and Grade 8 (US).

But in any case, the loads on a bolt on an engine stand are insignificantly low.  8.8 is absolutely fine as long as you have sufficient thread engagement (i.e. more than 3 full turns going into the block).  Hardened bolts (10.9) are for things that are forcibly trying to separate itself, or absolutely need to not move in the slightest.  An engine on a stand is neither.
