 W&N did reply to my emails but did not really have any useful suggestions or pics of anyone else having previously installed these in a 2002 although they do list them on their website as fitting1602 thru 2002.

 

These are without a doubt much stronger than stock. A little bit of work to fabricate mounts and then install but was worth it.

I like a challenge.

i can't help but fear that you may have substituted a compliant 'push rod', for a rigid rod which will transmit the load directly to the spot-welded boss on your sheet-metal.

I wouldn't be concerned with the load creating too much strain on the sheet metal as long as you don't have any giant rust holes (from the photos looks spotless...), very cool little upgrade.
