Brake Cable Removal

Had I thought of this before getting so stuck that the cable has been broken off at the rear of the tube, I would be a happy man. Someone mentioned it in our thread about the issues we have been dealing with.. unfortunately it was brought up after. But...

True that. But we are now cutting out tubes and replacing them. Might have happened regardless, but it would have been done last year.

Cutting the threaded end off to extract the cable from the the rear makes you wounder how hard it will be to slide the new threaded end and cable in from the back!

One of mine was stuck so badly that forming a loop on the back of the cable, attaching it to a comealong and then to a sturdy fence post just dragged the car backwards with it in gear and foot on the brake--till the cable broke. Had to cut the tube to get the cable out.

Post-mortem revealed the plastic cable sheath had rotted over the years and bunched up inside the tube, causing it to jam. Had I known that, some judiciously applied heat to the tube would have softened up the plastic and allowed the cable to come out Lesson learned--check the plastic sheath for deterioration before removing cable.
