Relay install for Euro H4 low & high/hi beam questions h

Hey. I've read all the relevant information, Bill's write up etc, searched a bunch, but still struggling with the electrickery. Specifically locating the correct wires. I am useless at electrics, good at breaking things that previously worked.

I have a RHD '73 euro round 2002.

Left light:

Yellow/black (continues past horn relay) (high beam?)

Grey/Yellow (continues past horn relay) (low beam?)

Brown (grounds to light)

Pale Yellow (terminates to plastic housing just before voltage regulator)??

Right light:

Yellow/blue (continues past horn relay) (high beam?)

Grey/white (continues past horn relay) (low beam?)

Brown (grounds to light)

Pale Yellow (terminates to plastic housing just before voltage regulator)??

I'm confused about which are the low beams and why the pale yellow (off white in the pics) ones terminate - i think? Refer to the pics for clarity. I have a multimeter, is there a way to test which wire is which?

I believe our lights work the same as a 3-way light bulb low beams is power to a single filament and high beams is power to both filaments.

you can look on 2002tii.org for wiring diagrams.

If you have a multimeter unplug the bulb and set the meter to 20VDC or somewhere around that- higher will be safer. Put the black to ground and the red to the wire you think is the low beams. With the low beams on of course. Do the same for the high beams.

In your picture with the yellow wires terminating, there are three wires. suggesting it continues to the cabin. Running lights? I have a Euro as well and have little 5 Watt bulbs in the bottom inside corners of my headlight housings.

Interesting. Unfortunately the car doesn't run yet making it difficult to conduct that test, but I might do a continuity test on the open wires and eliminate some guess work.

I too have those little 5 watt bulbs.

I'll report back.

Note the DIN numbers visible in your 1st photo -

58 = side marker

31 = ground

Try to find similar markings on the headlight connector.

The three wire termination to the connector is either for optional fog lights or a headlight cleaner.

Wire colors can fade and yellow over time.

the "termination" is not a termination. it is a tap. there is one on the left side of the car and one on the right side of the radiator support. iirc the left is a tap off the high beams for triggering driving light relay. the right is a tap off the low beams for fog light relay.

i use the left one for my driving lights. when my high beams are on, i can turn the driving lights on via a switch on the dash. if i drop to low beams, the drivings lights cut off too automatically. there is no reason to have the driving lights on if the high beams arent.

are you working from a 2002 wiring diagram? it is easy to trace the wires and color codes to see what does what from the diagram.

Appreciate the info, the din info is helpful but that diagram doesn't link up with my wiring, that diagram has relay's, which is what I'm trying to install. I know you need to often use a couple of diagrams for each car, but I'm having trouble finding one that matches even roughly.

At least (I think) I can take the optional fog lights/cleaner wire out of the equation, this might be enough to make it all work.

are you working from a 2002 wiring diagram? it is easy to trace the wires and color codes to see what does what from the diagram.

As mentioned above this is partly my problem, finding the correct wiring diagrams, I've used the blue oem manual ones, ebay blow ups, haynes manual diagrams and a couple from this forum, but nothing seems to match. My wiring is original, nothing except some air horns has been retro fitted.

ok, so did I did some investigating and as others mentioned, the pale yellow or white wires are for driving/fog/aux lights, therefore they don't effect what I am doing. I think I have partially it worked out, if anyone feels they have time to read over my guess work it would be appreciated.

From the left light:

Yellow/black - high beam - goes to point 87 on high beam relay.

Grey/Yellow - low beam - goes to point 87 on low beam relay.

From right light:

Yellow/blue - high beam - goes to point 87b on high beam relay.

Grey/white - low beam - goes to point 87b on low beam relay.

Point 85's go to ground.

Point 30's are power.

Point 86's are from the switched power. HOWEVER, this is where i'm confused. If i cut the 4 wires to the lights (left high & low, right high & low) I have 4 wires left over, and only 2 spots for switched power (points 86 on each relay).

So confused. At a guess I would say I would solder the switched low beams together and connect them to point 86 on the low beam relay, and do the same for the high beam. Although this is a complete guess.

Any help would be appreciated.
