horse hair seat pads - gone

Most seats have crumbled to the point where the foam is gone, the gummihar pads have fallen into the floorboards and the cover splits from rubbing against the springs.

I like the way the original pads feel on older seats - newer foam can make the seat overstuffed and split the original covers if stretched too much.

For my 69, I plan on using jute backing to cover the springs, then add the pads (possibly with a thin layer of foam). This method worked well on my VW seats (with new covers).

Jim--great info. I am still learning.

I like the original seat look. Trying to figure out how to pad it best.

Following your lead with jute and light foam. :)

If you have a good back seat, I'd use the padding from those pieces (cut to fit) your front seats. Most rear seats don't get much use (from sitting).

Note the front (2) springs have broken loose from the frame in this seat bottom.

You can see a little bit of the foam padding in this picture.

Very interesting and clean. I see the foam, thought it would go down the sides more.

Would it be beneficial to add more springs on the sides? Spread the load?

My rear seat gets lots of use...kids still :)

I don't think adding any springs would be beneficial - hardest part would be finding the correct ones since they would have to be shorter than the original fronts if placed toward the rear.

Note the S-shaped front-to-back springs are (1) piece of wire that are bent in a contour at the front edge.

When I did over my seats (F & R) I installed new Recaro's in the front and had the rear seat cover made with the same fabric. When I removed the rear covers the horse hair pad was in pretty good shape so what I did was put some foam ( about an inch thick-very soft) on both sides of the horse hair pad to make it soft but mostly to keep the horse hair in place and not fall thru the springs. Worked out great and no crap under my back seat 25 years later.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
