The solex carb is getting tired, my mechanic wants to put a kit through the carbie. seeing as though i am a poor student and dont need my 02 as everyday transport, i think i should have a go myself. so my question is.

how difficult is this job for a relative beginner?

thanks guys

Yep, you can do it. Especially if you don't need to drive the car every day and can afford some learning time. These things are tricky, but very learnable, and there is tons of info available for free on the interwebs, much of it pretty good actually.

I say, put in effort and go for it. I have been in a similar situation as you and have noticed that, learning as I go, it takes about 5 times to get it right, but from then on, I really understand what's going on.

Good luck!

Sure.

But add a decent book to the kit. Haynes is fine, Pat Braden's book is good.

And make sure you have good screwdrivers.

And patience.

And a digital camera, so that if you get stuck, you can take pix and post

them here...

go for it.

You gotta start somewhere.

Mine was replacing a broken rocker arm.

Take your time and ask lots of questions.

Don't feel stupid if you screw something up. There's plenty of us here that have screwed stuff up...and still do.

There are plenty of books on this. My favorite is this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Weber-Carburetors-HP-Books-774/dp/0895863774/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1317431044&sr=8-1

If you buy a rebuild kit for your specific Solex one-lung carburator, the rebuild instructions are in the kit.

Good Luck.
