trany noise

Does the noise change when you just touch the clutch pedal? Depress it just a little but don't disengage the clutch. If the sound changes it's the throw out bearing. If the sound does not change until you completely disengage the clutch then the sound is the gears spinning in the box (what oil are you using?) with thiner oil you can hear the gear rattle at idle, this is completely normal and not a problem.

The factory warranty fix for the 318 E30 when they went to ATF in the trans was a heavier flywheel to smooth out the idle. They added about 4 lbs to the flywheel, it really was noticeable and really SUCKED.

It is a huge hassle to remove the tranny (especially to get it back in). It is not worth doing, IMHO, just to eliminate a rather trivial noise. As long as you can shift and run the car, live with the noise, if it's just the throwout bearing making it. Once you really need to pull the tranny (like when your 3rd gear synchros go), then replace the bearing at the same time.

In other words, it isn't going to hurt anything for the bearing to make a little noise, so long as the car shifts normally.
