Heater Blower Replacement

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever tackle this? How long did it take? The fan never worked on my car and i've messed around with the heater controls before with no effect.

Yesterday while driving I had the heater control set to fan and after a few miles smoke came flowing into the cabin and from under the hood. It was insane. I wasn't quite sure what was going on but when i switched the fan lever off the smoke stopped.

Well documented in the FAQ section. Highly recommend a search.

Though not a "fun" job, it's pretty rewarding to rebuild the box properly. It took me a weekend to fully rebuild it. Actualy removal/install was right around 2hrs. I didn't think it was as hard as people make it out to be. It's probably harder if you have A/C in your car just from a workspace standpoint. I personally chose not to buy the $300+ blower/fan assembly and instead just got the porche blower motor for around $50. It's a PITA to swap the fan blades, but as long as you're careful you should be good.

I am in the same boat. I don't get smoke when I switch on the fan, but WHAP-WHAP-WHAP-WHAP, which is equally bad.

I am starting here:

to familiarize myself with the process before I tackle it

thanks for this link. i found another one but this one is much better.

the heater build has been the most rewarding rebuild thus far. Well maybe front and rear suspension are tied for first.

First be sure it's the fan and not the resistor in the heater box. This resistor is what gives you variable fan speeds.

First, try to turn the fan by reaching through the top of the box under the hood - check that it turns freely with no binding or rachetiness. Next, try powering the fan by touching some jumper wires from a 12VDC source to it. The fan should run when contact is made. If so, it's not likely the fan, more likely the resistor.

But, you will still need to remove the box to replace it, so look to do a full rebuild (+/- the fan as time budget permits). The foam on the directional flaps is likely all gone away, and there's a good likelyhood that the box no longer seals properly against the body allowing for a potential rust area when in the rain or even washing it.

Lots of good info here on Search.

Cheers!

Before you pull out your old one out, check to see if it is cracked etc. The one I pulled from my car almost fell apart in my hands. Before I tackled the job I found a spare in good shape and made 1 good one out of the 2.

word of caution. be sure the fann blade is properly weighted and balanced and I suggest you test it before you button things up.

the fan turns fine by hand. does anyone have the part number for the resistor? a picture of it? so if the blower motor is good would a bad resistor prevent it from working at all?

The resistor is actually part of the heater box. If you look up under your dash you should see 4 wires going into the box on the driver's side. Before you get to crazy, try and power the motor directly from the engine compartment. You *should* be able to get some alligator clips on the terminals, but if not you can hit it with probes. Just make sure you're careful and don't hit the body with the 12+ source.
