How to install drivers side floor mat around gas pedal

Recommended Posts

I cut out drivers side mat and successfully slid clutch and brake through. i detached the rod from the accelerator and slide it through the final hole. problem is that the base of the accelerator pedal is attached to the floor off to the right of the hole. Do i cut the floor mat around the pedal or is the pedal removable and then cut a horizontal slit to go over the width of the pedal? I've yanked, tugged and pulled the pedal and can't get the base off the floor. Help!

Not sure what type of floor mat you're dealing with (factory carpet or aftermarket rubber or carpet floor mat?), but the accelerator pedal bottom plate has two ball fittings that snap into sockets on the floor. They're a fairly tight fit for obvious reasons, but they just snap out with some force. Unless you have a rusty floor, in which case part of the floor might come out with them...

I modified a generic floor mat. i found a photo of an aftermarket BMW drivers side mat and it's clear to me now the mat goes around the accelerator pedal. The accelerator pedal's rod detaches from the pedal and goes through the far right hole in the mat and reconnects to the pedal. The pedal itself does not go through the mat as it's off to the side, connected to the floor at it's base. The mat runs along beside it.

As someone mentioned, the gas pedal has two holes (ball shaped) in its bottom and the floor has two attachment points, each a short shaft with a ball. The gas pedal just pushes its "holes" on top of these balls.

I just tugged, pulled and yanked until mine gave way.. managed to punch myself in the face doing it, so be careful there!

You *might* try using a pry bar and getting it under the pedal and gently lifting the pedal off the floor balls... might prevent the bruise I had on my cheek ;)..

PS - replacement is just pushing the pedal back down onto the balls once your new carpet/mats are in. You might slightly lube the balls before putting pedal back. You'll also have to cut two tiny holes in the carpet so it goes over the ball mounts on the floor.

if you haven't figured it out already, you'll have to punch a couple of holes in the carpet section to go over the ball end studs...then put the pedal back on...the studs come thru the carpet...the pedal base sits on top of the carpet

i try to place the heal pad low enough so there's room to punch the holes just thru the carpet and not have to punch the heel pad...but i've seen a few where obviously i wasn't paying attention when i sewed the heel pad on and got it an bit to high...in which case, the ball end studs go thru the heel pad and carpet

that was the plan, remove the pedal and then cut a whole for the studs but i couldn't get the pedal off. I then started cutting around the pedal but didn't like the look of any of it. Removed my custom mat and chucked it into the bin. I just have an old BMW carpet now slightly off to the side, nothing going through the pedals.

I may buy a set from the person mentioned above. Of course I'd still have to get that pedal off.
