Ian,

Thanks for the compliments. I took a look at the link to your car and all the stuff you have fabricated and I am amazed. In the words of Wayne and Garth when they were invited to party by Alice Cooper, "We're(I'm) not worthy" You sure did some job on your car. Great pics. I'll post more soon. Things are really moving along now after a lot of delays by the body shop.

Mike

Looking really nice Mike. Can't wait to see it done.

My 2002 was manufactured on September 15th, 1971 and delivered on October 22nd, 1971 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Granada, paint code 023. It was sold on New Years Eve December 31st 1971.

Thanks Jason,

This is just the color coat. I think the shop cleared it today. The engine compartment and trunk were cleared and they are looking awesome. They didn't even polish the clear and it was already looking like glass. I can't wait to see the outside finished. In the meantime I still have stuff to do with finishing mechanical stuff up, but I'm getting there. I feel like I have arthritis in my hands from this job.

Car is finally coming home Friday. Here are some shots I took today at the body shop. The job came out fantastic. Pictures were kind of hard to take where the car was positioned but I am very happy with how it came out. Now for the fun part..... putting it back together!

Thanks Guys.

I have to give credit to Deville Autobody here in Staten Island for doing a fantastic job both painting and filling all the trim holes on the car as well as making sure the quarters and all panels were straight. The shop is a small family run shop that I discovered through my brother whose friend had a 230SL done by them. It also came out great. They are nice people to work with and can do some or all the work for you. I chose to bring them the shell and do the finishing myself.

Made some more progress getting the wiring back in the car and most of the engine compartment stuff. Got my Wilwood Rear BBK installed and took some pics. Close clearance with RS wheels. Tried my OZ cast 15" and they wouldn't fit.

Engine is now in along with electrical and all the hoses and miscellaneous stuff. I had to take the carbs off to mess with the internals. I was missing the internal springs and the cable linkage wasn't working as it should. Seemed like they would not come back to idle reliably. I don't know why they were missing. I bought these 45's new about 30 years ago. The cable linkage I got from IE was also a little long and they quickly replaced it along with some tips on getting everything working as it should. I really want to work to get a good pedal feel on this setup. The last time I had the old ti linkage off the firewall and it never worked right. I think this linkage will ultimately work better and free up the area on the firewall for my vapor recovery bottle.

I also used the "fork truck" method of putting the engine and trans back in. What a breeze! Just put the fork extensions on and a block of wood across the forks under the trans. It worked so well I did the same with the rear subframe. Now to lift the rear up I'm going to be smart and bolt the driveshaft to the rear before I lift it in. If you use the fork truck method make sure you lift stuff real slow. It is easy to do big damage. A helper makes it easy.
