Setting Timing On A Non-Running Engine

I'm having trouble getting my engine to start after it's rebuild. It's really close but then bogs down. I think the problem may be the timing. Any advice on setting the timing on an engine that doesn't run?

Mods that might effect timing are 9.5 pistons, 292 cam, Bosch coil w/ Petronix, stahl header, lightened flywheel.

Use a circuit light testor. Roll the engine to a 9 degrees BTDC (you will have to estimate 9 degrees). The loosen the dist and use the circuit light across the breaker points while slowly turning the dist from a retard position to an advance position until the light goes out (points open). Lock the dist and you will be close enough to start.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

i've had success by aligning the TDC mark on the timing gear in line (centered) with the oil supply tube, then rotating the distributor to match the rotor to the little mark on the edge of the distributor housing.

this was after i adjusted valves, cold, to 0.006ish inch.

once the engine turned over i'd fine tune it by ear and double check with a timing light (plugging the vacuum line, btw).

"jimk" has it correct, it is a standard procedure used by old aircraft mechanics and racers for setting mag timing with a "buzzer" prior to starting a new or serviced assembly. I will add one other guide, hold the rotor against rotation removing lash. When the light goes out or the buzzer quits release the rotor and it will resume, indicating your right on the mark with the point opening. Following this procedure will give you perfect initial timing at what ever position the crank is set to.
