Thinking of buying a 75 2002 turbo clone...

Hey I am new to this site and I guess hobby, I have always wanted a 2002 since I saw one in Germany a few years ago. I have the opportunity to buy a 90% restored 75 Tii with a turbo already built in, in fact from the looks of it Id say the interior is the only thing that needs restored. I was hoping to get some advice on what to look out for, I am a bit scared to buy a turbo modification as I dont know what more I will have to invest in the car... this car is selling for about 9000 USD (take into consideration we have high taxes here over 25%)

Should I do it and deal with the consequences if any as I will never regret having this car or should I skip it and look for a new model audi? ;-)

If it runs and idles fine I'd look further into the car. Also, if you don't intend to troubleshoot and repair such a specialized induction system yourself, you need to find out if there is anyone local that would be willing to work on the car should the need arise. Lots of documentation from the owner - parts numbers, suppliers, etc. for the turbo would be great.

On a separate note, when you say a 'turbo clone', I was thinking thinking that it had the mechanical fuel injection system, but I from what I can see, it doesn't look like it does. This really doesn't matter either way except that the parts costs for the mechanical system would be more than a modern system.

Maybe someone who has built a Turbo themselves will chime in, too.

Also, scour the FAQ for "buyer's guide" and similar queries.

I am not super smart on turbos but have seen and heard about quite a few. With no intercooler and it looks like it is going to a carb. For 9000 i wold expect intercooled and injection system. just me. And I have an Audi turbo, They are to expensive a car to maintain in my opinion. Go with a nice BMW and smile

I'm not as dumb as I look

I would skip it and look for another. Looks like that turbo is sucking through a DCOE that is jambed up by the headlight. Then the fuel and air are hurled around and sent to an old 2 bbl intake. This means no Intercooler (bad) and not really a possibility of putting one in. This system is of the lowest investment. Pluss it looks like they hacked up the rad support to fit the carb.

Ug.

Move on.

Humm, I am getting more and more excited about owning the car, what a downer, I wish I knew more about the turbo systems. there is one more 2002 for sale which boasts 500+ hp... I think the first 2002 is well restored, I do think the turbo is scetchy however... Perhaps I can get it better one installed in its place?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
