  1. Thanks for the help - I had tracked down a NOS airbox, but it's pre-74, so identifying the different variants lets me know it isn't something later that I could possibly use. A shame, a nice NOS shiny airbox is awful tempting.
  2. I wish either was mine, when I got my car (74 tii) it was completely missing any airbox or filter, which is why I'm looking into what should have been there. To clarify if it wasn't already, the pictures are of two different airboxes that have minor differences - sounds like the one with the circled extra fitting us what I need to be correct for a 74.
  3. Hopefully I'm not driving everyone nuts with all my posts - the depth of my ignorance is limitless ! I'm noticing that there is at least what seems to be some differences between 2002tii airboxes - there's an extra fitting that I'm seeing on one. Are there more differences that I'm unaware of? Thanks!
  4. I'm in Houston - I've hooked up with some local 2002 owners on WhatsApp, maybe we need to plan a group outing and descend en masse
  5. I'm new to 2002 ownership - there's a salvage yard that has a couple of 2002s (one hacked in half) that have had a fair number of parts pulled from them. I picked up a driveshaft I needed from this yard and they were reasonable on the price - I'm going back over to see if they have any of the lesser bits and pieces that I've now noticed that my car is lacking. I'm open to advice as to any parts in particular that I should be keeping my eyes open for in addition to the ones I'm going for - any suggestions? I've heard that heater boxes tend to self-destruct and was thinking that might be something to look for - anything else? Thanks, Barrett
  6. Did you find that the added thickness of the coating interfered with the tabs of the sending unit engaging properly?
  7. I think I'm leaning towards the Gas Tank Renu (GTR) option at this time - I've developed a healthy respect for the staying power of rust. From what I was told the GTR folks cut any additional holes needed to media blast the inside with steel media after baking the bejesus out of it first. Then they check for leaks and patch any weak spots and bake on PVC inside and out. It's not cheap, but it sounds like it's done right.
  8. Thanks, great lead - there's one about 30 miles from me (aka relatively close in Texas distances).
  9. I got the bmw archives reply back just this morning - "BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2780966 was manufactured on January 16th, 1974 and delivered on January 22nd, 1974 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Granatrot metallic, paint code 025." It been repainted, to my eye if it's an original color it's now Verona. A good job was done on the paint job, and I'm finding surface rust on fasteners but I'm not finding any body rust at all (yet - there has to some somewhere). The other vin tracks back to a 76 non-tii 2002. Im neck deep in cleaning out the fuel tank, later today I'll start a new thread titled as you suggest.
  10. I've been told that state tax offices can sometimes get better information than the sheriff office (that's what they said) - anyone ever tracked down a cars history that way?
  11. I picked the car up in Texas where it had been sitting outside in a field of a towing company - for a couple years reportedly, and believable based on plants growing up between the suspension. The owners did not have the title for it, supposedly had taken the car in trade for work they'd done and then weren't ever able to get the title. I had the VIN run and it came back clean, the VIN matches on the cowl, block and number tag - but the steering column piece doesn't match. The car has never been titled or registered in Texas, and the only thing I've been able to find in the car with any name on it are the parts bags I mentioned. In general the car is in good condition, whoever had it that cared about it last (they put some nice work into it) was in the process of putting in a getrag 240 - so when I bought it the driveshaft was missing. I'd love to find the person who has the title - going through the lost title process is a pain, but better than having the car sit in a field deteriorating with people who don't appreciate it.
  12. I was looking at the wrong place online, it looks like a replacement screen is not NLS - $22, but not NLA.
  13. I knew that the '74 2002tii I recently bought had been sitting for I was told, two years. The gas gauge read empty, and I was hoping that whoever had last worked on it (it's someone's project car they never finished) had drained the tank. No such luck - it looks pretty rusty inside - and it looks like someone might have used some of the Eastwood tank sealer in it based on comparing what I see in the filler neck with pictures from a local 02 owner who was telling me about it and sent me a picture looking down the filler neck of their car. On their site Eastwood states that soaking with acetone will remove their sealant - my brother suggested that a radiator shop could "boil" the tank. I've not ever had something like that done, given the scarceness of tii parts, I'm hesitant to do anything without some advice from someone who has already gone down this path. And mentioning scarcity, I sprayed the fuel pickup screen in place with carb cleaner, just barely rubbed it - and it broke. It looks like this part might be NLA, can anyone confirm that? Thanks, Barrett
  14. I'm working on getting what I can for a registration history, the car is an unfinished project car that has changed hands several times since the project stopped. I only have the name from the parts bag, nothing more - there was a mouse chewed receipt in the trunk, but the address on it was destroyed.
  15. Just trying to get some history on my car, the name is on several parts bags, as I the dealer had set them aside to be picked up and put his name on them to make them easy to recognize they were for him. Barrett
  16. WTB driveshaft center bearing driver side mounting bracket - the piece that's welded to the inside of the driveshaft tunnel on the underside of the car. For whatever reason the previous owner of my recently acquired project car removed the bracket on just the driver's side - they never finished the 5 speed swap they were doing, it looks like maybe they were thinking of using a driveshaft that doesn't have the same center bearing location. Hopefully someone has a rotted out car where this piece could be pulled off without too much hassle. I know I could fabricate a replacement (and will if I need to) but I'm lazy and picking one up already made would mean just having to weld it back into place. Barrett
  17. I need the front section of a three bolt driveshaft to graft onto the 4 bolt driveshaft I have. Thanks, Barrett
  18. I've found a 74 2002tii in NW Houston that I can pick up for what I think is really cheap - I'd love to find a 2002tii expert do a pre-purchase inspection on the thing, but I haven't found anyone who could come look at it, and I think I'd have to buy the car to haul it out of there. It's been sitting for who knows how long, and reportedly is missing the driveshafts. I don't see any obvious rust in it, but I'm sure there has to be some in it somewhere. If I'm going to pick it up for little money I need to do it before the place that has it figures out what it's really worth. Any suggestions what is most important to check? At this point I don't even know if it turns over. I suppose #1 is checking to see if the engine can be turned over by hand. I haven't seen keys for the car anywhere, if they've gone missing, I suspect that a person potentially could jump a starter solenoid - can anyone tell me how to do that? #2 - compression check? anything special in doing that? It almost certainly has old stale gas that has potentially gummed up everything, so I suspect even with starting fluid thinking it might catch could be optimistic. Any suggestion on the millions of things I don't know anything about (kugelfisher, I'm talking about you!) would be very welcome. Why I didn't take any more pics of the exterior, IDK - it's straight, no obvious rust, I can't imagine it being original paint, but it has some scratches and other issues. Anyone want to offer opinions as to what would be a good price? (yes, those aren't the right seats for it (320i maybe?) but having the wrong seats is one of my lesser worries right now.
  19. Hello all - I'm new to 2002s, but not to BMWs. Was getting an emissions inspection done on my daily driver in NW Houston, noticed a 74 2002 back in a field - asked about it, they're claiming it was abandoned by the owner, it's theirs due to the storage costs. Can anyone suggest a person capable of doing an inspection on it - in place? They said it needs driveshafts, but that otherwise it runs. With just a cursory looking at it it looked pretty clean. I know there's may ways a car of this age could need a lot of work, so I'm interested in someone who'd be able to give me an expert opinion. Too far away to convince Terry Sather to come look at it, I need the NW Houston equivalent of him . I hope cross posting this in the Texas forum also doesn't get me in trouble here, but there wasn't much activity in that forum. Thanks, Barrett
