  2. I didn't realize that a glass see-thru sunroof was available for an '02. Did you save the glass panel? Jeff

  4. The engine in question this time has an E12 head, which would require piano top pistons. The difference between a low top piano piston with low 8:1 CR has about 1/8" rise, compared to a higher CR piston which has about 1/4" rise. Would a bore scope be able to show the difference? Forged versus cast is out of the question. A secondary use could be to push the bore scope past the dual carbs throttle plates to check for porting. If I found enough evidence of high performance parts I would be willing to assume some risk regarding the pistons, assumption being if there are enough high end parts in the head, then maybe the block was built in a consistent manner. Think I'll pick up a bore scope from Harbor Freight in the morning, $99, seems like a small investment and I can use it for other projects too.
  5. short of tearing the head off. I've looked at a couple of engines over the last year as possible donors but could never get the seller on the same page as I was due to the unknown engine internals. If you don't know the seller and he doesn't have any receipts for engine work what can you do to determine if an engine has high compression pistons. Let's assume the engine runs and you can do a compression test. What would you expect for compression values for a 9.5:1 or higher engine, what would you expect for a stock 8.3:1 engine. I can pull the valve cover and check for a cam, confirm if its a regrind or another offering and check for identifying marks, and the externals are easy enough, but the pistons have always stumped me.
  6. Sale pending for M42 engine mounts. Chris, just replied to your email.
  7. Mounts by jakeb, never mounted. Will ship to the cont 48 states for $150. High pressure externally mounted electric fuel pump suitable for M42 swap. Pump replaces Bosch 0580-464-048 and 0580-464-013, used long enough to confirm engine in parts car would run. $98 new, will ship to the cont 48 for $75. Rubber elbows show signs of cracking as seen in picture. http://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/E28-E24-fuel-intake/fipump.html Prefer you send email to jeff.green@philips.com. Can do Paypal or check, will discount for local pickup (NH/MA).
  8. Thanks to those who reached out and educated me on the scarcity of these pistons. I could have had a set if I was willing to forgo my son's tuition but wasn't looking to put that much into the engine. I ordered the IE 9.5 cast pistons last week. The set was $420 with rings & wrist pins. I'll get them balanced and they should be more than adequate for my needs. Consider this WTB closed.
  9. Ditto. Bathtub pistons for 100 euros if I would be so kind as to wire some money to him through Western Union.
  10. Looking for the following parts to complete my DCOE 40 carb setup - these are the bigger ticket items that would be nice to get pre-owned - Main venturis / chokes -34 mm , possibly 36's f11 and/or f16 emulsion tubes 175/180 air correction Thanks, Jeff jeff.green@philips.com
  11. Picked up a factory longblock engine over the weekend with low usage and flat top pistons for a 8.5:1. I haven't measured a bore yet but based on how the rest of the engine looks I suspect I could use standard bore pistons. Does anyone have a set of bathtubs to get me to 9.3:1 or 10:1 in good condition they would be willing to part with? I know Ireland has cast pistons for the 121 but they are 1mm overbore which adds cost to the budget. Updated - spoke with Ireland last evening and they provided p/n's - Mahle 9.3:1 standard bore 081 94 00 Mahle 10:1 standard bore 081 92 00 Jeff jeff.green@philips.com
  12. One year old, maybe 1500 miles total on both items. My son bought an E36 to play with so I get to tame down my 02's suspension. Ireland Engineering Stage II Sport springs. Per their web site they lower the car about 1.5" and are 30% stiffer than stage I. New they're $270 + shipping. Will sell for $230 which includes shipping to any of the contiguous 48 states. Urethane rear diff hanger bushings, part of the IE rear. Split design which is super easy to install. The kit is $60 new, will sell for $25 which includes shipping to any of the 48 states. Prefer you send email to jeff.green@philips.com. Can do Paypal or check, will discount for local pickup (NH/MA)
  13. Mine was rescued from a 10 year storage and stunk of mice urine. After doing enough repairs to get it marginally roadworthy, I did a late night run around the neighborhood and announced it was a POS. To be polite, it was called Scoot-n-turd while the mechanical & cosmetic repair continued. Today its fairly well sorted and has lost its stench. It is now referred to as Scooter and it seems befitting.
  14. I bought the AC Hydraulics jack last year after much research and love it. There was a nice write-up in one of the Corvette C5 forums about the AC versus some of the Chinese low rise copies. While many will extol the virtues and value of the import copies what stuck with me was a comment from one of the owners of a chinese import on how poorly the release-to-lower mechanism worked. Essentially he dreaded using it because it was an all or nothing drop. There's a rewarding feeling when you use a specialized tool that operates the way it was intended. The AC wasn't cheap but I deferred its purchase until I could justify the extra expense. I searched the web classifieds for used ones but ended up getting it new from Pelican.
  15. Thought I would update the old thread with some pictures of the mystery car. Essentially it was a restored car before it was parked in 2000. Body seemed solid, shock towers and trunk were good, floors seemed OK. The owner told of how the car was driven to VA for a paint job and the return trip was delayed due to rain and fear of getting the new Fjord paint wet (original color). I needed another project like I needed a hole in the head, but no#2 son was persuasive in his argument. The car is a '76, 136K miles, sunroof, 4 spd, Behr A/C, and a Weber 32/36. Nice original interior, seat stuffing shot. No#2 helping with loading process. It was complete and looked original, didn't run, front calipers sticky, fuel lines and brake line had seen better days. Overall body was good, one hole in right rear, and only a little bondo in left rear. Notice sticker on license plate, Oct-2000, been parked for 10 years. I arrived with trailer and cash not expecting the car to last long. Craigslist ad was pulled after 4 hours and 15 replies. I was second in line, and first guy backed out when he learned car didn't run. Had my wife show up in E39 daily driver to run blocker in the rear, borrowed trailer from friend, lights finicky and intermittent. Will have to update with more current photos. Front & rear subframes have been removed, sandblasted, painted and rebuilt. Bilstein sports & IE stage II springs, BBK in front, new fuel and brake lines, new Esty carpet set (minor rust in floor found once home), H4 lights. Also running some nice E30 basketweaves in place of steelie originals, and a 3 spoke 318is sport steering wheel. Haven't touched engine or tranny yet, not sure what direction I'm going. Have a nice set of Itailian Weber 40's on a shelf at home and this thing followed me home one day and donated a an M42 drivetrain.
  16. Deal pending for local pick-up. Thanks to all!

  18. Believe it or not I've been having excellent results with the local BMW dealer. I live 40 minutes from BAVAuto and they were my preferred supplier until this year. My E39 DD needed a washer pump. I called BAV yesterday morning, they were backordered ($43.95), and I wanted a pair of corn kernal stops for my '02 (2 @$1.95 from BAV). Not having a washer pump is not an option this time of year in NH. I called IRA BMW in Stratham. They had the pump in stock. They ordered the corn stops from the BMW NA warehouse, had them marked for overnight delivery. (They get daily deliveries from the WH). They threw in a pump grommet ($2.95) as well. My cost out the door with my BMWCCA membership was $40 even. I got home and in the mail I had a holiday card with a coupon for $75 off my next purchase of $150 or more. When I rebuilt the front end in my E39 DD, I needed a steering knuckle casting. All online sources, including BAV were $260 plus, and it would take a week. I called IRA and they got me one next day for $189 with club discount. I've bought a lot from Blunt for my '02. Excellent results from him as well. If I plan what I'm doing, I'll use Blunt. If I forget something or need it overnight, I use IRA.
