  1. i'd like the big under-dash panel (i.e. the non-padded one that looks like a trapezoid on a rectangle) if still available. thanks!
  2. Or try Brad at Harold's Upholstery in Palo Alto. He did my '02 seats last year. (650) 433-0051
  3. jack, will you be taking your car to lime rock over labor day? just wondering as i missed it last year. thanks, rich
  4. A friend of mine has an '02 that's (unhappily, I'd assume, not to anthopomorphize or anything) just sitting there in his driveway, and he doesn't feel like looking for someone to fix it. If anyone knows of anyone up there, please let me know and I'll pass the info along. Thanks. PS it's a square light car with dual webers that were added on at some point.
  5. Looking for the 4-spoke non-padded hard plastic one with the roundel. I think this was the stock wheel used in '74 which was superseded by the padded one.
  6. Had my door lock replaced and my mechanic recommends getting new steel (vs typical after-market brass) keys made, i.e. the $13(!) ones BMW makes and sells through Maximillian et. al. I'd like to have them pre-cut in order to avoid the locksmith issues people have had before, but I don't know the key number. I know that with later model BMWs you can order a new key if you have just the VIN. Anyone know if it's possible with older cars like 02s? Thanks.
  7. Now the lock cylinder has apparently come out of the handle, which I assume means it's broken in two. Does this mean that the solution is now one of simply (or not so simply, to this luddite at least) replacing the cylinder with a new/good used one? Anyone in the Los Angeles area know anyone local who can do this without my having to barter the car itself in exchange? I would try to do it myself but I'm not local right now...
  8. Thanks for the help. Going to start with the graphite and go from there... BTW, my VIN is 4224756, manufactured 3/20/74, so yours would have been made a little before that.
  9. My driver's door lock has evidently stopped working, but only when trying to use the key, i.e. it locks from the inside and unlocks with the inside door handle in the usual way. Until recently, it took a lot of effort to lock and unlock using the key, and now the key apparently turns a little bit but does nothing. I couldn't tell from prior posts, but does this mean that the outside lock is shot or that part of the mechanism inside the door may be jammed? Until I have time or money to fix it is there any chance the inside part could stop working as well? A friend in LA is looking after the car for me so I may have to walk him through the repair, though that may be smarter than waiting until I'm back out there and trying to fix it using all of my city-slicker thumbs... Thanks
  10. Don't do it! Like every former '02 owner I've interviewed, you'll regret it.
  11. if you watch carefully, you'll see a green squarie drive by several times during one scene. regrettably, neither sean penn nor josh brolin was behind the wheel. then again, no '02s were harmed in the making of the picture...
  12. anyone else spot it amid the chaos as kiefer fended off the hostiles? seemed a bit out of place amid the random assortment of junkers in the background...
  13. Seems like a mechanical, not an electrical problem, as the switch now doesn't stop at the detent when the lights are usually on all the way. It just turns and turns and does nothing. Old posts don't suggest this exact problem with the switch. Anyone have this happen to them? If the switch is bad, anyone have a replacement? I'm in Los Angeles and am not crazy about driving while holding a flashlight....
  14. to keep the plates (which you MUST do under any circumstances, as it makes your 02 a zillion times cooler and that much more authentic) do what i did: register the car in cali and keep it in texas. you can give the dmv your texas address and they won't bat an eyelash. you can also renew by mail. blue or black original plates on a cali 02 just seem right, and the white ones don't. btw my car had the blue plates when i first owned it, and when i found it again in washington state and bought it back again (after twelve years and four subsequent owners) the plates were still on it. the two wa owners never changed the registration, so i lucked out. i then drove the car back to cali and re-registered it, just getting in under the grace period before i might have been forced to switch to the awful white plates, which, imho, make an 02 look tacky.
  15. thanks for the suggestions. hopefully she'll get on it before the battery runs out...
  16. my friend who's been looking after my car accidentally turned on the hazards, and now she can't shut them off. evidently the switch won't stay in. anyone have a quick solution before the battery dies? i'm sure i could fix it in two seconds if i were there but she's in cali and i'm in new york, alas...
  17. for more, check out: http://www.imcdb.org/
  18. i think i've got a car lined up now but thanks for offering!
  19. If you're going up Sunday for the day and wouldn't mind someone riding shotgun, let me know. I'm on the Upper West Side. Thanks.
  20. tom, that would be great when you have a chance. thanks, rd
  21. thanks steve. would it be possible to borrow your copy to make hi-res scans of the whole thing? i may want to use it in the movie. thanks, rich dana frompus AT gmail DOT com
