  1. I swapped an older 5 series alternator on my 02. I am in the middle of installing another motor and I remember that the wiring is slightly different. Do you know what the new wiring process is... If I remember it was not too difficult. I can't remember because I took the motor out a few years ago.
  2. My E30 M3 whistled once.. it was the front windshield... I would put masking tape around the edges of the windshield and drive it to see if it goes away.
  3. I believe it prevents the heat from transfering throught to the outside of the header, instead, the heat transfers thru the exhaust gasses which for whatever benefit is supposedly better for performance. One problem for a street car is that often times these 'wraps' can cause rust problems to your header... a race car there is not a problem. Option would be Jet hot coating... these are my headers with A LOT of miles on them. The grease spots are from my dirty gloves when I pulled them off the car.
  4. +1 on the Pilot Bearing. I just took a tranny off of a Engine I bought and the Pilot bearing was in pieces. The car shifted funny when I test drove it, it did not grind but I had a weird time finding 2nd and 3rd gear. After talking it apart I found the shifter mounts on the tranny were 4-5 turns loose and the Pilot bearing was toast. Replacing the Rear crank shaft seal and plate gasket will not hurt. Use Anti Sieze on the release bearing where it slides on the tranny shaft... (tip Merlin told me). Good Luck, Robert
  5. Thanks, that is my last resort.. I just rented another 'slide hammer' tool from Kragen... this may work better, if not, to the machine shop I go.
  6. EDIT: Rented the slide hammer from Kragen. Used one of the 3 claws used to pull out gears and it worked! Note: It only worked because I have a needle pilot bearing and the needles and inside work gone. The claw fit to pull out the outside race... Took 2 slides of the hammer. ***************************************** Original Message: Anyone have the tool I could borrow for 5 minutes. I'll bring the engine over and it should not take too long. I have the needle type pilot bearing that disintigrated and the Kragen tool I rented does not work (the claws don't grab) .. I think it was designed for a bigger ID. Thanks, Robert (Alameda)
  7. Thanks for the info. I'll probably check the motor next weekend... I'm in Alameda. If you are free I'll email you a few days before I go. Thanks again, Robert
  8. I am going to check out a used motor and have some basic questions. I've never done a compression check and need some noob advice. Will the local Kragen / Autozone carry decent compression testing gauge? What numbers should I expect from a semi new rebuild with 9.5 pistons and a relatively new rebuilt head? And finally, what is the best way to test the compression. Sorry for all the questions, Thanks
