  1. There should be a ground wire between the alternator body and the engine. It is usually has brown insulation and is connected under a bolt on the top timing chain cover. The other end to the wire is connected to one of the long screws extending through the alternator body. If there is no wire the alternator may be trying to make contact throught the mounting bracket or belt tensioner.
  2. The way you mounted the radio has embarassed your ride. The radio is showing off its uncovered area too much, and your ride thinks it is inappropriate. Just a thought!
  3. Another possibility is that the nozzles are plugged. You can clean them with your air compressor.
  4. I would follow the instructions that came with the new gaskets. As with most things, materials and processes change over time. The manufacturers have made changes that allow you to torque at assembly after intial warm up, and then not again. I did the process as indicated by the gasket manufacturer, and have not had a problem with my gaskets in the last year and a half. FWIW!

  6. On my '76 the washer bottle and pump were placed above the brake booster. The wires came out of the bundle next ot the polution control relays. Hope that helps.
  7. Look at: http://www.2002ad.com/storeworks/view_item.cfm?id=1946 They list $19.50 plus shipping, of course!
  8. Curt, Here is how the 320i does it: Please note the contact is item 22. I wonder if the 2002 mounting points have the same spacing as those on this 320i picture. Where did you get your information?
  9. Thanks for the suggestion, but the BayArea02 article indicates modifications to the contact ring on the steering wheel. From what I understand from 2002AD, this contact is supposed to be mounted to the steerinf column somewhere and then no modifications to the 320i steering wheel are needed. Is there any other wisdom?
  10. I just purchased this horn contact adapter from 2002AD: Does anyone have a technique for installing this thing onto a 2002 steering column? I'm using a later model steering wheel, so I need this to make adequate contact with the contact ring on the steering wheel. Any help would be appreciated.
  11. Often you can get it to start by adjusting the distributor as the engine cranks. Other than that you might look at the wire postions in the distributor cap to make sure they are going to the right plugs. just a few thoughts to consider.

  14. Here's a pic: Snorkels are on Carb cars. Tii didn't have one when they were built.
  15. Here's a picture of the rebuild kit made available through Beck-Arnley The Beck-Arnley part number is 713107. Use an air compressor to remove the pistons. Cylinder access is best if you separate the caliper halves, by removing the four bolts. Make sure the pistons are not pitted. New pistons are available from Walloth u. Nesch, GbR. Then lightly hone the cylinder walls, so the pistons will slide without binding (just enough to remove the rust). The O-ring between the caliper halves can be replaced with a Buna-N type available at most hardware stores. If you mess up the bolts when they are removed, use new M8 cap screws of the appropriate length. When re-assembling use some brake cylinder lube - makes life a lot easier. This is a job that will save a lot of bucks and you won't have to worry whether the rebuilder did a good job.
  16. JP, Thanks again for putting together the 9th annual drive for us in the Bay Area. The vistas were really good! For those of you who chickened out because of the weather-there wasn't any during the drive. We'll be there again next year!
  17. You'll need to lower the center support bearing in order for the tranmission end of the drive shaft to separate from the guibo. You mentioned earlier that you had removed the nut holding the two halves of the drive shaft together. Put the nut back on the center shaft of the drive shaft before lowering the center support bearing, or else the drive shaft might come apart. If the shaft comes apart it must be lined up in the exact position it was earlier, or else it won't be balanced. Lots of trouble BTW. Good luck.
  18. Another area that needs to be considered when rebuilding these carbs is the throttle shaft clearance. Since the carb body is a soft alloy it tends to wear as the throttle shaft is rotated. In order to get a good seal around the shaft and prevent leakage of air you may have to install bushings. Most auto machine shops can do this. If air leaks around the shaft the carb leans out and then things don't work right. If you get bushing put in and they make a good seal the carb will last a long time, since the bushing material is better than the cheap alloy of the carb body.

  20. The relay on the fender well is for control of the auxillary fan. You might have a blown fuse or loose connection somewhere. I sent you an e-mail with my e-mail address if you want me to send a couple of manual pages from my Clardy A/C installation manual in .pdf form.
  21. Set the engine to Top Dead Center. Remove top timing chain cover. Remove top timing chain pulley. Then remove head. Of course you'll have to remove the intake and exhaust manifold, beforehand. Whan you put it back together set the valve train back to the same position, and put the top pulley back on the front of the cam at the same setting. There are always a few things that can go wrong so be careful, and you will be sucessful. One thing to consider if you are having a valve job done is that the rings may not be up to the new compression available from the newly refurbished head. You will then start to burn oil past the rings, and/or have low compression.
  22. it will slide out the front if you hold your tongue right.
  23. with the 3M adhesive cleaner. Everything looks better when you're done!
  24. The second of the two wires likely goes to a revolution counter. In these pages: smog systems you will find several references in various models to a 'rev counter.' These boxes are mounted on the firewall and switch on relays, etc. Let us know if this idea helps solve the problem.
