    07/13/2024, 10:00 PM
Post Swap and Show "Tacos and Beer Party" is back! Let's eat some Tacos and drink some beer after the big BayArea02 Event. Bring yourself. Nothing else is needed. We have several beds, a couple of air beds, lots of couches, and floor space if you want to stay the night. Many have done this in the past. The last time, we managed to fit 12 cars in the driveway and the rest at the bottom of the hill. I think we can do better than that  I think 17 is the magic number. You are wel

  • Fit E88 1 series seats into a 2002

Hi everyone, I have just purchased the front and rear seats from a 2008 E88 convertible.  My aim is to fit them into my 2002 Tii. Has anyone on this site fitted these seats to a 2002 previously?  If so I would love to hear your experience. The seats were good value, are comfortable, I think will look good and they are manual not electric.  I have attached a photo of the seats. Any experience with a 2002 and these seats would be appreciated. thanks Mike Perth WA

Spending a week off working on the interior of my 2002

And the thread starts here! I took a week off to spend with my Dad and get some overdue work done on the interior of my 2002. The plan is to remove the glass which I did today, then remove the dash and prep the inside to paint it all with epoxy paint on the roof and the window pinch welds and also put rhinoliner on the entire innerfloor pan. Will I even get that far? I hope so, here is the start in pictures. Window removal front, rear and both quarters:

    Help Degreeing My 284 CAM

HI Experts,   I’m assembling a newly refreshed engine and I’m at the point of degreeing my IE 284 regrind Cam.  I need some help and validation to what I’m doing.  I assembled a couple of engines with friends when I was younger (two small blocks), but this is my first adventure with a BMW and I’m 40+ years older so please excuse my ignorance.  Or maybe it’s just loss of memory!  LOL   Here’s my set up:   Head is an E12 with 9.5 89.5 piano top pistons Cam i

  • Pinned Speedometer Fix

I'd first like to credit @Mike Self with finding this fix. He published a column on this back in 2007 (which he'd be happy to forward you), I'm just adding photos to his findings.    SYMPTOMS: Main symptom - Your speedo needle pins to 120mph when you hit highway speeds. Secondary symptom - Your speedo is slightly off and or you get needle fluttering below 10-ish mph.  Unrelated symptom - If your speedo needle is constantly fluttering throughout the speed range it's more likel

    Headliner Installation

How to Install a Headliner in a BMW 2002 *All the typical warnings apply. Be careful. Don't cut your fingers off. Read the labels on all tools and chemicals and try not to maim yourself. If your 2002 is in need of a headliner, a professional shop can do the job for $500-1000. I've heard of people bringing their stripped car in with the parts in hand and only paying $100, but I haven't yet found that shop. So, the following is a guide to install a headliner in your 2002 in your garage. It's

    BMW 2002 Torque Specifications

It is imperative to use proper torque on all of the bolts on your car. For your convenience all the specs have been compiled technical manual and sorted as it would be in the BMW 2002 Service Repair Manual.  Data is provided in Newton meters (Nm), meter kilopond (mkp), and pound foot (lb.ft). 1 Nm = 0.102 mkp = 0.738 lb.ft   Please, use a high quality torque wrench to achieve good results.   Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

  • Freeing Stuck Rear Brake Adjusters

One of my least favorite jobs on a 2002 is adjusting the rear brake shoes in order to lessen the brake pedal travel. In principle, it's easy—you just pull off the rear wheels, take a 17mm open-end wrench, put it on each of the two adjusting nuts on the backing plate behind each brake drum, rotate the drum, turn the adjuster until you can hear and feel the shoe rubbing against the drum, back the adjuster off a tiny bit, do the other adjuster, then move to the other side and do the same on the oth

Front Strut Replacement The Hack Mechanic Way

Front Strut Replacement   Overview Okay. It's time to replace your front struts. Maybe you're doing it as part of a shocks-and-struts job. Maybe you're updating the entire suspension—shocks and struts, springs, and sway bars. Maybe you're doing a full front end refresh including ball joints, tie rods, center track link, and idler bushings. Maybe you're doing an undercarriage refresh and are sandblasting and repainting the subframe and strut housings at the same time.   W

Chillin' Louie: To Coldly Blow (Part IX: Firing it up, buttoning it up)

Okay, with the compressor and bracket, condenser and fan, evaporator assembly, receiver-drier, hoses, and wiring installed, it was time to fire it up, then button it up. Similarly, with the project itself complete, it's time to button up this series of articles. As such, this is a long piece that touches on a number of topics.   Leak detection   There's a whole chapter in my a/c book devoted to leak detection, and specifically to the use of nitrogen or other dry inert gas to

  • Backdate - 4/29/21 - Purchased the car from a fellow FAQ'er

I bought a 2002! After looking around for quite a while and my daily commute ending, I decided to sell my newer fun car and buy the car I've always wanted. I'm an engineer at heart and wanted something that would allow me to be creative and engineer what I think is the ideal 2002. My car that was sold to purchase this was a 2011 Volvo C30R which was very fun and pretty quick but lacked the connection a vintage car gives and it felt that any upgrades were just chosen from a list that everyone had

    A Rolling Resto-mod Rally Car Build 1

Replacing some Rubber and an Interim Battery

As spring gave way to summer, I started to prioritize getting this Electr02 rolling.  My first trips on the car involved using the existing battery and equipment as it was purchased.  Although I did have some very successful cruises around town, it was clear that the batteries were past their prime and needed to be replaced.  For most of the Electr02's life, it was driven without a BMS, so cell voltages varied enough during use and charging to be suboptimal, maybe long enough to stress some of t

    Chasing Leaks and Tuning Idle

Well, one good thing about getting the motor running, it does provide some quick feedback on if you have any leaks.  After going through the mis-adventure of the leaking heater core, (turned out to be just the hose clamp to the heater core on the driver's side), I did identify 3 leaks while running the motor.  I had an oil leak at the oil filter housing, a coolant leak at the thermostat and a transmission leak at the back of the transmission (output shaft seal, shift selector seal, or both).  Tw
