Volvo brake upgrade - ATE vs Girling difference

I didn't see a ton of clarity around this when I ordered my big pile o parts, but unfortunately I learned through personal experience that the ATE and Girling calipers are not interchangeable.

The vendor I bought them from thought that the ATE and Girling calipers could be substituted for one another, so they sent one of each. To be clear, both fit the 320i hub, but they are physically quite different. The girlings are larger and slightly heavier from what I can tell from the ATE. ATE and Girling brake pads are different in size - the ATE pads are smaller in width than the girlings and the mounting holes are closer together on the ATE pads.

Thankfully the vendor I bought them from was great to work with and agreed to replace the ATE caliper with a Girling one to match the other one I have, as well as swapping the pads. Wanted to make sure that you guys were aware though - as again, it wasn't clear from forum searches as to how they differed, if at all.

Holy Hell- really???? I've never come across that!

Thanks for proving me wrong. And I'm sorry I was!

I bet most know..but thanks.

Curious what the cost per cali was?.....loaded or not?

hmm from the dozens of threads I read through and the lack of clarity around this on the FAQ, I doubt this widely known - esp for noobs such as I ;)

I got a smokin deal on the girlings - $20 a side rebuilt from rockauto. Had some issues as mentioned with them sending me non-matching calipers because they thought they were substitutable, but for the price I'll wait :)

This price was not loaded, but pads are like $10 and brake hardware (guide pins and spring clips) are $8 total for both sides - from eeuroparts for those pieces though (cheaper and I've had good experiences with them when I had a saab)

Reviving this old thread.

Supark, can you get us the measurements of the Volvo pads? ATE or girling? I ordered some porterfield RS4 brake pads and they came here before the calipers I ordered. I'm still waiting on the calipers but I would like to know which pads porterfield send me for which calipers so I can make sure it fits.

Thank you for your help!

Or if anyone can give the dimensions of both ATE or Girling caliper pads
