How to tell when your tranny is dying

No, its not a reference to the aged hooker that you picked up one drunken night...

I think my 4 speed is going. I put the car up and let it spin in first and its has a chirping noise coming from the rear of the trans. The guibo is good and the center support is new and adjusted. Could it be the bearings going in the tranny? Things feel a bit rough on decel and the chirping goes away sort of on accel.
