me and a friend have been playing about with electrolysis cleaning for a few weeks ( http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/andyspatch/rust.htm ) trying to see what works with big parts and a big volume of water . Has anyone else tried this ?

Am now tring it on my e30 back subframe that i will be putting on my project in the next few weeks

here is the subframe in the tank

and the process starting to happen , bubbles on the top off the water

I did this to my front subframe and it came out nice and clean, and with all the rust gone along with the grime that it had collected over the years

I did the inside of my gas tank using a small battery charger and a piece of re-bar suspended down inside. It did an okay job after 2 days. Be sure to vent the hydrogen gas!! I ended up using dilute hydrochloric acid to remove the rest of the surface rust, a phosphoric acid rinse to resist further rusting, acetone to dry, and finished it off with a gas tank sealer. Total overkill but it looks great.

I've been doing it for a few years now, you can't beat the result if you're not in any hurry.

I've upgraded to a 3'x'3' bucket now that is lined with an expanded metal cage that I welded together so that it just fits inside. I get full a full 360º exposure to the electrolisys (except from the top).
