Has your steering colomn been pre loaded? If at some stage you have had your steering disconnected from your steering box you will have to push down on the steering wheel towards the dash against the resistance of the spring(on the shaft) then nip up the bolt on the steering box , if you dont do this that little collar will miss by about 1/8 "and your ind wont self cancel as it will miss.Im pretty sure this is in the Haines manual.

I have no idea if the column was pre-loaded. The previous owner assembled the car...

The spring at the steering wheel seems normal.

I do feel better knowing that the two collars that secure the rubber-flex-disk-joint to the steering box, and steering shaft are more secure. Many of the teeth were visible on the shaft and the shaft is sunk into the collar more.
