My granddaddy had a red '63 that we used to ride in up and down I-75 from KY to GA to MI and back again. A cooler fit perfectly behind the backseat. He eventually sold it for $500 and bought a VW Bus. I learned to drive on a robin's egg blue (don't ask) '64 that my mom had back in the late 70's. My sister loaned/gave me a Super Beetle while I was in college to commute to my PT job. It wouldn't start when it rained! She painted the faded red car a very faint lavender (after I gave it back!)

You got me all nostalgic here with this thread, Jim! I almost forgot about the VW's in the family. Oh, and my uncle in KY still has an orange 3-door wagon. (Sorry, I am not up on VW nomenclature).

V-Dubs are always cool! Does the "wagon" look something like this Blue Type 3 Squareback? Photobucket

That's it exactly...except his is "inka!"

This thread just added another stop to my Oct trip home...really great memories! Since I am rambling, he was in the Army stationed in Frankfurt, Germany and he and my aunt brought the VW and my cousin home compliments of "overseas delivery!"

Type III's are pretty cool. My parents bought a brand new '68 Red Squareback (FIRST major production car with electronic fuel injection). Unfortunately, it sort of had issues and they sold it. I think they still have some old photos with my sister near it. Will have to find and scan them.

Is the squareback a 4-speed? Does the front hood have a downward curve to it - or is it kind of pointed? Are the bumpers like the one in my picture - or are they straight? Please get some pics!!!

Just phoned him; his first wife got it in the divorce! (I actually forgot about her...but, not the car.) Oh well...

My first custom car was a 69 Type 3 wagon. I painted it rattle can silver and blacked out all the trim with flat black paint. I made 300 bucks when I sold it. Haven't made a penny on one since, lol! Jim, What is the best place to get a carb for my ghia? I think this one is on shaky ground.

Andy - do you browse www.thesamba.com? Lots of cars and parts there.

There are tons of companies selling VW parts, from Chinese copies of twin-choke Webers (EMPI HPMX) to rebuilt Solex ones.

It really depends on if you want new or used parts. Your Ghia originally came with a "smogger" type Solex with all kinds of doo-dads that are most likely long gone or don't work anymore.

Care to share what you have...

Wow - very harsh judging.

Now I know - I will probably never participate in a concourse. My ego couldn't handle it.

I keep thinking of the story I heard about Ferry Porsche. He was at a Porsche gathering, and someone at the concourse said "you must be proud to see so many cars with your family name on them.".

Ferry turned and said "Our cars were meant to be driven, not polished".

Or - like Jay Leno says - "Restore it to a 10. Drive it to an 8".

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
