Per the BMW Blue book specs, the tii fuel pump:

Bosch # B 580 112 339 (previously 0580 364 002)

Delivery pressure: 2.0 bar (28.5 PSI)

Fuel delivery rate: 110 litres/hour (29 gallons/hour)

Max. current consumption: 4.7 amps @ 12VDC

Fuse rating: 8 amps

It is important to note that the rebuilt tii fuel pump from MesaPerformance is $ 275.00 with an exchange, not outright.

The E12 530i fuel pump (info from K Kreeger's website) is BMW # 16-14-1-179-232. It is smaller in diameter than the stock tii pump. Current price from Max is $ 320.94 so that one is now going up.

Mounting bracket with expansion unit is # 16-12-1-120-970 @ $ 51.42.

Using the part number cross reference on Max's site for the E12 pump:

Out of curiosity I just dropped Jaymic a line to ask the difference between their 102gbp and their 221 gbp pumps. One of them is marked OEM and the other BMW. 102gbp is 165usd, so that would be the most economical way to get a pump, even with shipping from the UK.

Jim, if you haven't bought the E12 pump yet, you might consider doing a bit of haggling with Max. Parts.com has it for 239.64 Bell BMW (bmwautopartsdealer.com)'s price difference was less dramatic, 297.69. And surprising: Pelican Parts carries it for 183.25; they usually are closer to MSRP.

Fuel system - Fuel supply - Fuel pump

Fuel pump, gas, 6 cylinder 1984 - 1987

I'm probably the only tii owner running around without a backup pump. Was hoping locals Matthew, Jim and I could get a group discount from Jaymic or W&N, but still looking.

John - you and I are in the same "boat".... no backup pump. I did buy a new tii bracket and expansion jar recently.

The attached from Pete at Jaymic just this morning. Both pumps in their site are the same, except the cheaper one does not have the BMW logo

and the more expensive one at the bottom

I changed to the E30 pump this weekend and have driven it two days this week. It seems to me that if you're going to go through the trouble of rewiring and possibly running new hoses to make the E12 pump work that you'd be better off spending a little more and going with the E30 setup.

You can get almost all the parts needed (except the nuts and washers used to connect the sender to the pump) at AutohausAZ for under $400 I believe. I ended up splitting my order between AutohausAZ and BavAuto so I could get the right nuts/washers, but if you have a stash of nuts you won't need to do that.

All the parts were OEM (VDO in the case of the pump and sender), genuine BMW for the new fuel hose. I went to a junk yard to get short sections of wiring harness to have the correct end connectors so I could make harnesses to plug into the existing connectors. You want the wires from an 88-91 E30. Cost at the junkyard was $6.

Advantages:

- The pump is still fairly noisy like the stock pump in case you don't want to lose that tii sound.

- You don't have to climb under the car anymore to clean out the little inline filter in the pump or troubleshoot pump problems. Everything is in the trunk. Note: Bill Williams relocated his main fuel filter to the old pump location to clean up the engine compartment. You can do that too, but I liked the idea of not having to get under the car for anything.

- You can replace that horrible big fuel hose that runs from the tank to the pump and doesn't actually fit through the hole in the body. With the pump in the tank you just run normal 8x13 hose to the hard line under the body.

- The fuel gauge actually indicates the correct fuel level when you go around corners. It doesn't swing +/- up to a quarter tank like the stock sender does.

- If the resistance wires in your old sender are kinked (like mine were), the new sender will give much smoother operation.

Most helpful review of the mod.

What's the usual lifespan of the original tii pump? Just wondering how long I have until I have to start gathering bits.

My old pump was, to the best of my knowledge, original to the car. About a year ago it started getting noisier. I checked the filters and screens and didn't see any obvious gunk (although I cleaned them to be sure) and the noise got better after a while and then would come back sporadically.

One day, with no warning (i.e. it hadn't been noticeably louder at the time) it just stopped working. I was able to bang the pump with a hammer to get it going again, but that was enough warning sign for me.
