Timing Chain Replacement...

yeah...

I replace 'em whether they need it or not on a complete rebuild.

And they seldom need it, except when the head's been milled too much.

Then the adjuster runs out of range pretty quickly...

On a 'rings and bearings' overhaul, I don't usually worry about it.

The stuff's tough.

I replaced one once. It was probably unneccesary however in hindsight.

Here is what I did:

1. Take off cam cover and spark plugs. I left the tensioner and rail in place

2. Hit the starter to see which way the cam rotates

3. File a rivet head off one of the chain links and remove the link

4. The new chain will have a master link. Using this, attach the new chain to the old one.

5. You want to attach it to the end that will be fed through the engine

6. Put the car in gear and have your pit crew push the car foreward.

7. Feed the new chain down through the engine and pull the other end up

8. Detach the old chain and connect the ends of the new chain together.

9. Check cam timing before firing engine

10. Bask in self satisfaction for a moment

I first owned a 2002 in 1975.

I want to replace it because i get a very nasty rattle at like 2500 rpm, now its gotten to be all the time unless your WOT.

How would you check the rail?

I replaced the tensioner not to long ago, and it didn't help.

Thanks for the instructions, they will help a ton.
