73' 2002 overheating when idle

Recommended Posts

I have a 73' 2002 automatic with no modifications. Lately, I have been driving and noticed that when the car is idle, like in traffic, or at a stop light, it begins to overheat. The temp goes up quickly considering I'm at a stop light for less that 2 min. When I begin to drive, it quickly cools down again.

Any suggestions of what it might be? Stuff I should look for?

Thanks,

JW

Hi,

the most likely culprit is that the radiator

is restricted on the inside. but, you should

also check that the front of the radiator

is not plugged with dirt or leaves.

curtis ingram on this board has the only

good radiator replacements. you may need

to send him yours because most automatic

radiators have a cooler in them.

good luck

Actually, that really DOES sound like the fan-

if the car cools itself while it's moving, then the rad's working.

One other idea- a sticky thermostat that isn't opening the

little bit it takes to increase water flow when you stop...

Thanks, I just checked the radiator and it was like 3" below the fill line, WTF! Especially since I have been to the mechanic regularly for the last four months (odds and ends). I did check the fan belt and it feels a little loose, I have about 1-2" of pull on the belt.

I'm thinking of flushing the radiator out, but do you think that might be overkill? I was going to wait to see if the correct amount of fluid helps out with the heating issue.

If not, then I'm going to tighten the belt. Thanks for your help and I will keep you posted.

Um, tighten the belt anyway-

if you're cooling at speed, it's not slipping,

but it could. Or it could decide to part company with the

car, which would be... bad.

Low coolant will do it- I cracked a head that way...
