Steering wheel play

Recommended Posts

I've searched around the forum but I haven't seen this discussed directly and I was hoping someone had some advice. When I push up on my steering wheel, there is a bit of play in the steering column. Pushing side to side also has some play, but not nearly as much as up and down. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Steve

Drop the shroud and under panel trim and tighten the 2 bolts that secure the column, close to the steering wheel.

Careful putting it all back together, esp around the horn ring!

follow the previous post. Also, if there is in/out play

you can remove the slack by putting a preload on

the steering 'guibo'. Untighten one bolt that clamps

the steering rod and pull(push) the steering column

toward forward or pull(expand - therby getting preload)

the rear side of the guibo toward the rear of the car. Then

tighten the clamping bolt. The tension that this produces between

the steering box and the steering wheel along the steering

column (rod) pulls it tightly into a firmer position.

So after disassembling the steering wheel, I don't see exactly which bolts to tighten. The two bolts on the column in the middle of the photo look like they just hold the outer column in place. The inner shaft is the part that is moving and when I look closely, it seems as though the bearing that holds the inner shaft in place is loose.

Further thoughts?

Hmm, that is not the usual problem. See if you can isolate the play, and then look here to find the replacement for the offending parts...

Hopefully someone who has torn one of those apart farther than I can chime in with more detailed advice.

The above diagram link is for a '70 btw.

Good luck,

...........and resurrect this 2007 thread....as I am searching for an answer...

I am having up and down play in my steering column, so much that the carbon pin on the back of my Nardi steering wheel is missing the horn ring (which also has a bit of slop) at times and blowing random honks at people that I do not want to be honking at.  No side to side play, all up and down.  Anyone else figure this out (or have it?).  The spring loaded pin is perfect as is the horn ring (besides a bit of up and down movement).....if I can tighten up the column then it will all align.......any help appreciated.  Thanks.
