02 Valve Cover Question

I've been looking at these polished valve covers that are up on

Ebay from time to time. I haven't bought one since I think, I'm

going to try polishing one of the extras I have in my parts stash.

Every once in awhile I see an 02 valve cover that next to the

breather extension, has a flattened area (rectangualr in shape)

with the attachment holes.

My question is: what went there?

There's a polished cover on Ebay right now with one of those and

for the life of me, I can't figure out what went there. All of my extra

covers do not have that flat spot.

that's probably a cover from a 320i. i saw the same one today on fleabay. i just figured it was from an E21 and there was a mounting spot for some piece of gadgetry the 02s didn't have.

anyone else any smarter than me?

Correct, That is not an 02 valve cover, it is for an E21. That is the pad for attaching the auxillary air valve, part of the cold start system. Don't know if the 4cyl E30 cars used that set up or not. Suspect thay did.

I did a quick search on google images and it appears that type is for a '77-'79 320i. The early 320i has an intake manifold the same or similar to a tii, so both have the short breather connection but a tii doesn't have the flat spot and holes. I don't know what attaches to the holes. The later 320i's have a roundel insted of the "BMW" lettering.

I have spare valve covers and I have never seen that flat spot on an '02 cover. Goes to show ya why '02's are far superior cars!!!!!!!!!!!

NO WORTHLESS CRAP on the engine, and if it had emissions stuff on there, it should be gone by now - unless of course you live in CA! :-)

As the others have said, that's from an e21 that had an aux air valve. I'm using that valve cover and air valve on my megasquirted motor. Here's a pic:
