What are we doing for wing/vent window seals?

Recommended Posts

My 1969 Neue Klasse has just about completely disintegrated vent window seals.  Looks like the leaking from them has destroyed the veneer inside the car as well.  I can get the veneer fixed, but - the vent window seals seem to be NLA, and the only set I've found is a pair out of Indonesia on eBay for a reasonable $600.00 /sarcasm.  Guy has about 88% approval rating too, so shady.  Maximilian doesn't have them.  I can't be the only guy looking for these - is there a solution here?  I can post in parts wanted, but it seems like that won't get me the answer I'm looking for.  I searched this site - no real mention of them.  Any thoughts?  Thanks!

FYI - part numbers 51326654265 and 51326654266

Could not help but see these all over eBay - they sure look right - but part numbers are different, and I'm sure they aren't exactly the same - but I wonder if it's close, or could be modified to work.  I think we have to be creative on the solution here.

Hi all,

I have dealt with that guy from Indonesia when I bought old style front and rear windshield seals for my '67 tilux.  His prices at the time were high but not loony-tunes ridiculous, and he shipped them quickly with no problems.  I, too, could not justify paying what he is now asking for any of his parts, particularly as the Canadian $ was worth about US $.90 at the time compared to it currently being worth 2 turds in a basket (thanks, Socialism!)  Sorry, I digress.

I have a pair of NOS NK vent window rubbers which I bought off ebay.de about a gazillion years ago.  I will eventually need them for my resto, but this thread got me thinking about the possibility of using them to 3-D print a pattern as a first step to remanufacturing them.  There must be about a hundred or so NKs left globally and most of them obviously would need vent window rubbers by now.

I personally have no background in manufacturing, so if anyone has any comments or experience in remanufacturing rubber parts, I would welcome your input.

Alex - you'd have a market of at least 1 set from me :)  I wonder as well how crazy it would be to get those reproduced (and windshield and rear window seals, trunk and hood seals - probably some I'm missing).  With my Isetta, seals are plentiful and cheap.  Maybe the 3rd party manufacturers of those seals wouldn't mind adding these to their catalog.

And - yes - I found that guy from Indonesia as well.  Damn - he has everything I need.  Just need to cut my leg off to pay his prices.  He has gold and knows it.  Also concerned by his feedback rating on eBay.  I'd hate to spend 2500 bucks and end up with nothing.  Wait - I should of stopped at I'd hate to spend 2500 bucks...  But that's what it would be for front and rear window seals and vent window seals.

That was where I was coming from Alex, but that is a tricky looking mould. Its 50 years since I worked in rubber moulding, and for sure the tooling was quite prohibitive. Now we have a chance. I am keen to give it a go with some of these cold pour processes. I was assessing similar options for the indicator lens when Krakatoa came in with 1000USD the pair, but to get clear plastic is much harder than dense rubber boom boom,.
