LSD casings... wider than standard diff casings?

Hello gents and ladies,

I have an LSD centre to put into my E21 diff casing.

The centre will not drop in with the crown wheel attached. the width from bearing to bearing is the same as the open centre that im replacing.

My question is, do the factory LSD casings have more clearance on the sides?

No, the dimensions of the bare open case and bare LSD case are the same.

-Unbolt the top plate of the LSD

-Set case on its side

-Slide in the now-open LSD center section into the case, taking care to not spill the guts.

-Slide in the top plate (and the smaller two internal washers)

-Retorque the top plate down, using the side cover opening for access.

then continue with the reassembly/shimming/etc.

I've seen the cases ground down or machined a bit from the factory.
I had to machine 2 of 3 longneck Diffs I built, but I never assembled it in pieces
