Rear seat foam thickness

Recommended Posts

As with most my rear seat horsehair is sitting on the floor of the car, under the seat.

The vinyl is in good shape.

I want to replace what was once horsehair with upholstery foam.

Can someone tell me if they have done this and the thickness required.

While you're at it I may need to do seat back too, so any info on that would be appreciated.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I had the same issue with our '73 rear seat.  After removing the vinyl and discarding the remains of the horsehair and canvas, I cleaned and painted the rusted frames. Then I attached a layer of heavy canvas material to the frames, using hot-melt glue.  This was followed by a layer of 1" foam, and then a layer of "angel hair".  These padding layers extended over the frames to soften the curves.  On the seat back, the padding extends all the way over the top.  Then I reattached the vinyl, using the existing metal tabs.  Ultimately, I decided to change the seat color to match the new front buckets, using SEM Vinyl dye.  I am very happy with the results.  Someday next year I should have it all back together.  Hope the pictures help.

Thanks, good idea on the glue gun.

So, the bottom seat is flat across, no small hump over the driveshaft, correct.

The seat back has a little protrusion from what I can see.

I am not doing horse/angel hair so guess I need 1-1/2" foam.

I may do 1" foam and some 1/4" carpet underlayment that has a rubber backing.

It depends somewhat on the model year. I believe all the bottom cushions are pretty flat, but the backrests received a bit more sculpting with the April 1971 introduction of the Modell 71, and a bit more sculpting with the August 1973 appearance of the square taillight (originally, the Modell 73).

Below,

1.) a Black mid-1971-73-style seat from VIN 2762204 (manufactured July 10, 1972)

2.) a Nylon Brown 1974-style rear seat (from the August 1974 version of the 1975-76 U.S. brochure), and

3.) a Navy Blue 1975-76-style rear seat from my ‘76.

 Regards,

Steve
