engine and drivetrain M20 Question

Is the E34 M20 engine the same as the E30 M20 engine?  I've read a couple places say they think the mounting holes on the engine are in a different spot possibly further back.. but no ones will confirm this. Yes I've searched several times on this. Sorry if it's been answered already. I just want to widen my options on getting an M20 down the road.

The mounting holes are the same.  The arms (which don't apply to us) may be different.  There are a couple other inconsequential differences, nothing structural.

so this engine would be a perfect for an 02 m20 swap?

It would do the job just as well as a normal E30 325i M20.

There are variations in oil pans, though, aren't there?  There are for the M30's...

Yep. On the e34 m20 the dip stick is mounted on the oilpan and the block's original hole is plugged (the plug is interestingly still available from BMW).
