I just checked out the vin on the cars registration. Funny thing is that it looks like it was made in late 71 making it a 72, but the registration says its a 71. Have to dig a bit deeper to find out but i have the knee line trim that's for sure.

Early 71's had no knee trim, and shorty bumpers...late 71's had long tail bumpers and knee trim, like 72-73's...and some other changes...hope that helps.

And, yes, a U.S.-model '02 manufactured after July '71 (through July '72) is, indeed, a '72 model.

My very early '70 model (manufactured September 8, 1969) was registered as a '69 in the hands of the first owner, then (accidentally) registered as a '71 after my purchase of it, but when I tried to correct the registration, it wound up once again, as a '69! Sometimes you can correct incorrect registrations, sometimes you can't!
