Rearview Mirror Lever

I'm on my second rearview mirror, which is now having the same problem as my first one. The mechanism connected to the lever that tilts the mirror for nighttime no longer seems connected; it's loose. As a result, the mirror itself vibrates. Has anyone successfully taken one of these apart and rebuilt/repaired that mechanism?

Thanks,

The mechanism that shifts the mirror from day to night is cardboard and plastic; when the plastic breaks, you're SOL.  Guess BMW didn't figure on us driving 2002s for 40+ years!  I've gone through a couple on my '73 over theyears.   All is not lost however...

Take the opportunity to upgrade to a larger mirror from an E21 3 Series, an early 5er or best of all, a maplight mirror from an E30.  They all pop right into the same hole in your windshield header, will clear your sunvisors and give you better vision out back.

You might try removing the glass from your broken mirror--use a heat gun to soften the plastic a bit--but I don't think you'll be able to repair the broken plastic hinge...
