My 1976 1502

then i started on the flywheel!!

using 4x2's recipe (kind of) i began swapping over the ring gears.

m10 flywheel on the left m44 dual mass on the right

SAM_2743_zps8d87cd96.jpg

beat the ring gear off the m10 flywheel with a hammer and chisel and some help from a blow torch

and then the m44

SAM_2745_zpsa84f5851.jpg

now tried the m42 ring gear in the oven but not a chance it was gonna fit over the m10 flywheel!

i then took it to work and hit it with a gas and oxygen torch and still no luck!!

so i ended up removing 2mm off the inside of the ring gear using a rotary tool now the ring gear had a chamfer line that i used as a guide so it seems pretty uniform and hopefully wont affect the balance but if it does by by crank bearings! :/

anyway managed to beat it on with a mallet but forgot to get a photo which i will add later. i'm going to try get away with using the m44 throw out bearing and also the m10 clutch as its pretty good but if that doesnt work i will just have to buy a 325i clutch.

got some bits painted up

also lopped the tabs off the top of the e30 gearbox

im going to bolt the shifter carrier to the tunnel and then change the length of the linkage once ive made the engine mounts

today i recieved my m42 upper and lower oil pans, new water pump and an engine stand so i can get it all put together!

i also removed the power steering pump as i dont need it but now i have the issue of setting up the belt to run without the big pulley. i might have to just put it back on and run it without it working. could there be a chance it will burn out without the powersteering fluid to lubricate it?

as far as i can find out the m10 ring gear would work ish! i think it has the wrong amount of teeth for the m42 starter but if you shim the starter closer it will start it but just makes a horrid noise haha! using the m42 ring gear hopefully i can use the m42 starter stock. I can talk about this stuff but i havent actually tried it on the engine yet so it might throw up more headaches yet :D

over the weekend me and my dad got the engine in and one mount made

starter motor is in but dont know if it works yet :S

Also front brake booster wont fit in with the manifold and alternator in there so my plan is to use flex line and move it behind the passenger headlamp. not the prettiest fix but im not ready to mess around with swapping to a single booster haha!

also ditched the ps pump and it looks like a short belt will work aswell!

  • 1 month later...

long time no update but things have been happening.

car went off to bodyshop once i had got all suspension and steering back together with all new bushes, tie rods etc and wheels and tires.

cut out the back arches but my dad had finally had enough of the metal work noise in his garage so the car went off to a Triumph restorer that happened to be round the corner in my parents village.

Was originally quoted 1500 for welding up the arches, fixing the doors and spraying the doors, flares, bumper but on visiting the car after the restorer had welded up the rear arches and boot drop off areas and then smoothed and fillered it all he said it had taken a great deal more work than he had thought and that it would cost 1000 to finish the rest of the work then approx 1000 to spray all the bits. Unfortunately i've got a lot of things going on money wise at the minute so have told him to repair just the doors and the rusty bits behind the headlights which should mean all visible rust has been terminated.

been quite annoying not having the car for the past few weeks as i could probably have finished all the mechanical stuff on nights and weekends.

On getting the car back i will get to work trial fitting the arches and front bumper however i have got new wings on the way which could take 4-5 weeks to arrive so in the mean time i will tackle all the electrical/ mechanical work left.

car looks really squat on the Spax adjustable kit and the 8x13 minilites with -14 offset! tires are 205/60 and are medium compound toyo proxes 888.

My bonnet is has rust at the front which has been previously patched and so like the rest of the car was is probably ruined under the paint. plans are to replace it with one of these

also i have totalled my glass with all the grinding in the garage

so will be replacing with lexan  B)

fingers crossed car is home for the weekend then i can get some more photos on here

Hey Mlytle i've heard they are ok for the price but will definately take the advice and shop around first. Dont think i could afford the shipping and tax from America but the second place looks good! Doesn't list prices on the site so reckon i will email them as im after a rear bumper aswell!

The car looks great, like you said really squat. It seems to have rusted about the same rate as mine around the front end. I’ve been using the polyurethane epoxy mastic paint and been quite impressed with it. You can paint on just about any surface (pitted, bright metal or over paint) and it dries very tough but best of all, being an epoxy it totally seals up the job to keep the moisture out unlike a conventional primer.
Must’ve done a good job buttering your father up as I don’t suppose he was too glad to see the car back  oh and still got those long rear bumper ends if you decide you need them.

hahaha i might just give the chain a go!! will be easier than welding up the mess that is the door bottoms! might get a little damp and cold on the drive to work though

thanks arkid is the epoxy mastic paint just primer or was it the top paint? been a bit of a pain trying to sort paint out as paint shops just dont want to come and quote up the car at all! been sending emails and ringing all over the place and no one really seems to be interested. Also i seriously don't want to do it myself with something like cellulose as i wouldn't do the car justice as i don't want to be messing at home with 2 pack?

yes the car in the garage again has maybe caused a little tension but really he has been great about it i'm just trying to put in a little more effort to keep the place clean now that 98 percent of the rancid grinding and stripping is done.

The bmw  is my only car so as soon as its mot'd i will definitely drive over and nab those bumper end off you!

got a rear arch test fitted up last night so im hoping i can get the shell paint ready for when the new wings turn up and then should only take a night to prepare those for paint.

the horror of fixing the bottom of the doors is haunting me though

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
