FS: 1971 2002ti - SOLD

I am considering contacting the seller of this 2002ti. The pictures look great and the desciption detailed. However, I cannot travel to Canada for a pre inspection. I would be relying on the integrety of the seller. I know ti's are rare and mayble only 30-50 exist. I have SEARCHED every forum post and I still cannot get a grip on the value of a ti in the condition described in this ad. I have seen junk for $500, average ti's for $5,000 and a few listed over $20,000 or higher. I do know that prices are going higher and not many ti's come up for sale. Looking for an opinion on VALUE and buying without a pre inspection. I know it is dangerous, but not all seller's are dishonest.

+1 on what Tony says!

Never buy a car without having a third unbiased party inspect it for you!!

A quick Google search revealed more than a few BMW repair specialists in or around Calgary. I have done out of state buyer inspections many times and am sure at least one of these shops is at least familiar with '02s and would be happy to coordinate with the seller. One word of warning though, it is best not to take the advice of a seller as to which shop should inspect a car. Many times I have seen sellers and shops in cahoots... First find out which shop or shops the seller has had any work performed and then try and find a shop that doesn't know the car to perform the inspection. I have also heard of a shop that inspects a car decide to tell the potential buyer that it is a POS so that they can keep it for themselves... C'est la vie

There are more than a few shops recommended by people on this BimmerForums thread...

Agree on the advice. Thanks for your thoughts. I have read the latest posts regarding misrepresentation. It is so tempting to chase a good looking ti like the one being advertised. If this ti sorts out as advertised, what do you think of the value??? When I see ti's advertised for $5-6,000 they are located in another country and with little description regarding orginality. I believe originality will be the key to the future value of a ti. This darn agave looks like the real thing. Whoops...it does have a snorkel...but stuff happens and that is a fairly easy fix. Since it is only a two owner ti, I will see if the seller will offer some history to prove it is the real thing. It seems to be such. I guess the chase is half the fun.

OH, and usual practice is that the potential buyer gets to see/hear the results of said inspection that they paid for first. If the seller wants a copy of the report, they can confer with the buyer and or pay the shop for their own copy, but again, only after the buyer sees/hears it first.

As for value, I have seen SO few real 2002Ti's come up for sale that it's hard to determine.

There are some local Calgary members on this board that might be able to help. I would want to have a look under the vinyl on the rear shock towers, as well as an extensive look at the underbody. This looks like a good car but Canadian cars can hide expensive secrets, no disrespect intended to the seller. Pricing is debatable, but seems to be somewhere in the ballpark, given how few come up. The few we have seen in Eastern Canada were not nearly in the shape of this one.

Tom...thanks for motivating me to really think before I leap. Never thought about a potential inspector describing the ti as a POS so they could keep it. After I contact the seller, I will do my due diligence. Of course the ti may have already sold. I will let you know.

Jeez, a guy goes away for the weekend and all of a sudden he is a dirt bag. My brother and I are happy to cooperate in having whatever shop you choose go over the car. You can show us the results or not. I won't suggest any of the local shops so as not to taint the pool although I won't be able to stop myself from commenting if you make a bad pick. Just let us know.

No, the buyer is not a regular here (although he has two tii's) but we've filled him in on the excellent support to be found here.

Any chance we could get more pictures or new location of this car?
