Hi William,

Sorry to hear about the car.

I own a Body shop in San Diego. If you have any questions or need help of any kind let me know.

Are the pictures still up? For some reason I cant see them.

If you keep the car and are doing the repairs yourself, let me know if you need to borrow a frame machine or a welder and a technician.

I am in North Park (Adams Ave) if you are not too far i could come take a look if you like.

I also wanted to mention,

Don't just accept what they offer you, hear their offer and find as many comparable cars for sale and sold that you can find. but only use the ones that benefit you. Then you can start to negotiate.

Also if the car is at a tow yard get it moved to you house. The tow yards charge a daily storage fee so the insurance will be in a hurry to finish the process and get it moved to a salvage yard.

Thank you, Bernie. Just left a message at your shop; we are not far away from you so, if you don't mind stopping by, I'd love to show you the car--I retrieved it from the yard the day after the accident, after I found a tow truck that could negotiate our driveway. Appraiser is stopping by tomorrow pm, so I am going over docs and getting ready for the ensuing negotiation. Took the pics down for now.

Thanks again. I look forward to meeting you.

Hello Bernie,

Insurance-contracted appraiser came, took some pics, filled out some forms, and left. I gave him a couple of comps and pictures of the car before the accident.

Thanks again for stopping by on Wednesday, and to all for the help preparing for this next phase!

Well, the good news is now you won't be tempted to bring your new baby home in a 40 year old car.

Interesting point, JhC! My parents brought me home in a 1957 Thunderbird convertible, and we survived San Francisco Bay Area traffic. My 38 year old tii protected my life the other day, and I wonder how the event would have turned out had I been driving a newer car.

A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of flying a 1957 Piper Apache on floats. This plane was unique in that it was then a fifty year old multiengine seaplane Just beautiful. Hard to describe how it felt to pilot this machine in Northern California! Jessie joined me on one of the flights and I did not hesitate to have her onboard, because I felt the plane was safe despite its age....it was old, but well maintained.

Old, but it all works

"when is boarding time on this flying bucket?"

"Hop onboard, honey. Ship's old, but she is reliable and handles like a dream."

Two years ago, we crossed the United States and back on Tip Top. The 72tii went from San Francisco to DC, to Maine to Washington state and back to California. 26 states, 10,000 miles, and lots of friends. We felt safe in the car, indeed it never failed us, and we did not have any mishaps. Some will swear that tiis cannot operate above a certain elevation, but we found ourselves over 10,000 feet in the Rockies, and the car just zoomed along; we even passed an X5. I still smile when I think about it the X5 on our rearview mirror. Good weather, bad weather, light traffic, dense traffic.....We managed risk by making sure the car was well-maintained and we were prepared, and made it through, and we had the time of our lives. We look forward to having children so we can share the same experience with them.

We had one of the most pristine tiis we have seen, and we chose to drive it daily. The car is a crumpled mess on our driveway right now, but that is a small price to pay for all the memories and experiences we had, and for all the friends we made. We understand why some people do not drive the 02s all the time...they are rare, can be expensive, and maintenance can be time consuming, and weather in some parts of the country exposes them to premature damage.

Our goal is to provide our child with a safe environment in which to grow, be curious about the world, seek adventure and new experiences and friends. We want this child to manage risk, but not avoid it.

There is a lot to teach our child. He’s on his tenth week, and he apparently is getting 250,000 neurons a minute, and delivery day will be upon us before we know it. Time is short. We are eager to prepare our child for the world, and we are likely to start as we drive the baby home from the hospital, probably in an old bimmer!

If you don't have a running 2002 by then, you can borrow mine to bring the baby home in. (if Jessie is OK with bringing the baby home in a squarie)

Thank you, Lane! Jessie thinks your car is great, and you happen to be a few blocks away from the hospital! We can turn this into a San Diego 02er event....caravan to welcome the baby 02er?

In the meantime, here's the daily driver I picked up yesterday.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
