how do i remove the trunk lock barrel from the rear panel ?

Mal,

from inside of the compartment, look for a lock nut; it will have a couple of notches on it, usually start the unloosening by hitting the notch lightly with the flat end of a screwdriver or similar; it's a tight fit back in that area, have your other hand under the lock while loosening so the lock unit doesn't drop between the trunk floor and rear panel.

In addition, if that thin, flat nut has not been off in a while (like, since the car left the factory) it might help to spray it with some penetrating oil like Wurth's Rost Off, AeroKroil, etc.
