Car stalls and stuttered help.

Had a 200 miles trip, was driving on the interstate, the car drove really great, at about 150 miles to the trip , the car stated stalling, stopped the car, the car starts good and idles like it always has, but once you press the gas to move, it starts stalling, I had new spark plugs and fuel filter installed 3 weeks ago, air filter cleaned,, was towed home... any ideas? Thanks

tank is vented properly. Easily done by removing the gas cap and then seeing if the car runs properly.

If the vent is plugged up, the fuel pump will increasingly suck against a vacuum, eventually to the point where it won't suck fuel any more (and that really sucks!). Then the engine will stall for lack of fuel. The lesser fuel demands at idle might permit enough flow to keep it running.

If the emissions plumbing (on 71 and later '02s) has been inexpertly messed with, you might be left with a less than perfect venting system. On earlier cars, the vent pipe comes out under the trunk floorboards, and can get plugged up with dirt, etc.

A quick way to check for crap in the gas tank is to pull the fuel gauge sender/gas pickup unit from the fuel tank, and examine the screen at the bottom. If it's cruddy, you need to clean out your gas tank. Also shine a flashlight down inside the fuel tank and look for munge in the bottom of the tank. Check archives for sender unit R/R tricks.
