Quick question: I have a 74 2002 which according to VIN and the list above would be a Model 74. It was built in March of 74 according to my research. It has round tail lights. Does that seem correct? It doesn't look like it's been altered. It's also a 6 fuse electrical box which seems odd, but may no be. Thanks for your insight.

Surprised at how few right hand drive BMW 1600 were built. I have a 1600 and chassis is between numbers 1550001 and 1550628. Only 628 built between 66 to Dec 67. Mine is a Jan 67.

Are those number correct?

What sub-model is your car? Is it, per chance, a Euro-spec touring model?

Can you provide photos of your car’s VIN numbers:

1.) “chassis number” stamped into the outer edge of the right inner fender,

2.) metal VIN tag riveted onto the right inner fender,

3.) metal VIN tag riveted onto the top of the steering column, near the instrument cluster,

4.) paper VIN tag on the rear panel of the left-side (driver’s) door, and

5.) engine number, stamped into a flat boss at the rear of the block’s left side, just above the starter?

6-fuse fuse boxes were last used in April 1971, being replaced by the re-vamped Modell 71, with a twelve-fuse fuse box, at that time. The last round taillight conventional ‘02’s were manufactured in July 1973, but touring models continued to use round taillights into the square taillight era.

I'm a new owner of a pre-71 BMW 1602 but after check in the informations that we have here i could not find the range of the vin number.

vin chassis: 1063700/VN

motor: 1063700

according to your table, there were some cars that was send to Portugal as a CKD, but also don't have that range...is after and near of the last pre-71 1600-2, and the 1602 only makes reference to Mod-71

Any information it would be important.

I have only just seen your query. I do hope you read this. You certainly have an interesting number.

Is it possible that the number in the document has been mistyped  and should really be 1.060.370. You may be able to confirm this by checking the number that is actually on the vehicle and engine. You will find the number stamped onto the rear of the right hand wing and on the chassis number plate under the bonnet near the RH strut. The engine number is stamped on the block where the starter motor attaches to the block.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi John,

i don't have anymore that 1602, sold it to someone that going to restore it but i check all the numbers and it was a matching number car, stamped on the frame and the engine also have same. After that i sold also a 2002 from 71 and also a matching number car and also a assembled car in Vendas Novas.

Now i'm with a Mercedes W123 280CE.

Hi- been a member for a few years but only recently have dipped my toe into the 2002 pool. I currently have a deposit on a car in for a PPI (today!) and if the vehicle checks out, I will be the owner. The car in question is a 73 2002 Touring Tii. At least that's what it was billed as. Upon checking the VIN numbers on the  provided information in this thread above, there was some question as to whether it was a 2000 or a 2002. Not a huge deal as they are the same car but the production numbers are quite different as only ~750 2002 Touring Tii's were made.

The reason I bring this all up is the VIN on "my" touring is 3425XXX which based on the production information above, puts it as a 2000. I emailed the BMW Group Classic and Andreas Harz confirmed (this am) that it is in fact, a 2002 with a production date of July 16th, 1973. Just wanted this noted as some of the published data can be in-correct and depending on your situation, it may make sense to email  the Classic Group and Andreas directly to get conclusive information. Just wanted to add this to the thread...

Big thanks to several forum members (you know who you are) for putting up with my questioning around this topic! I should have gone directly to the Classic Group right out of the gate.

Details of the response from Andreas.

"The VIN 3425xxx belongs to a BMW 2002 tii touring that was manufactured on July 16^th, 1973 and delivered on July 30^th, 1973 to Switzerland. The original colour was Fjord metallic, paint code 037.

The BMW 2000 tii touring and 2002 tii touring are in fact the same car, only the type designation had been changed but this was already done in autumn 1972. There never was a “crossover model“.
