  1. Because I got a 74 for a good deal with minimal rust and mostly straight body. I just can't stand the square taillights, nor can I stand the plastic grills with round taillights. These cars are not easy to find in good condition for an affordable price and lets face it, a lot of people upgrade to most of the bits that come on mine stock anyway. Kind of surprised this seems uncommon around here.
  2. Only looking to change the outside appearance for the most part, just about everything you listed is a downgrade from what I have now so I will stick with what I have. I will also reskin the seats with 74 skins since I have the seats and the core of all of them are rebuildable (unless I find some decent seats near me, shipping freight is expensive). Since my dash has a lot of cracks I will try and redo it myself but if I have to get another I will lean toward a 69 dash and if I do that I "might" change the cluster.
  3. Wow she is beautiful! Curious if you have a picture of the rear of the car, my guess is there is the cross bar between the round taillights, a BMW badge and a 2002 emblem all on the back panel, and no BMW badge on the trunk. Reason for this post. and why I am making it a 69 is I used to have a 69 two decades ago but I have no pictures and I can not remember every detail yet am trying to recreate that car as it was my favorite car.
  4. I have done auto body work on the side for 20 years for personal builds, I already have purchased: brand new rear roundie panel both roundie taillights polished rear bar that goes between the roundie taillights Center section of a 1969 front grill metal to weld/bodywork into the front to make it pre-74 Complete front 3 piece grill I will be removing the add on sections to the front and rear frame rails that were added for the diving board bumper shocks> I will also be re drilling the front bumper mounts and patching the square holes in the front then adding the correct holes (already have the hole gaskets for the front bumper mounts) I CAN make a 1974 body into a 1969 because except for what I have described above almost all of the body panels are the exact same. Will it be easy? Nope. Will it be cannon? I am sure there are those out there that can appreciate a 1974 that has had the work done on it correctly during a full rebuild. I am one of them 😉
  5. Wow that's a really nice one! What in the world is the chrome across the dashboard? I have never seen it before but it looks amazing!
  6. Hey, Currently building my 1974 2002 similar to a 1969 base model and am wondering a few things. Mostly want to know If a 1969 came with: knee moldings what bumper styles did it come with a sunroof (my 1974 has a sunroof) what specific grill set I am on the fence on having knee moldings on my car and if they did not come on a 1969 it might help me decide to remove the holes for them or not. Thanks! Rick
  7. Hey! Looking to find a drivable set of front turn signals with flat lenses. dont really care about the color, cheapest ones I have seen have been the amber ones which would be fine. I dont want to break the already broken bank on these but if you have a pair that are not perfect but look decent from 10 feet away you would let go for a good price with shipping to 93436 I would like to purchase them from you. I can't stand the overweight looking ones that came with my 2002. Best regards, Rick
  8. I won't be working on those for a few weeks so if you find the time to make me a template I will send you 20 bucks PayPal 😉
  9. Wow some great answers and as always some nice offers to help I love this place! I know I can figure out the hole size I need to cut from the rubber pieces I bought. I can just take a piece of cardboard and figure out what a tight fit cut out would be. I think the only thing I really need to know is how the front bumper mounts bolt to the left and right sides of the subframe supports that extend all the way along the fender wings. I do know that the square channels for the 1974 diving board bumpers pockets were welded on top of the frame rails and that the holes for the bumper mounts were welded up as I can still see where they are on the thinner bottom square metal frame rails. I just need to know if the 1973 bumper brackets go on the inside or the outside of those bottom rails and I can probably figure it out. Having said that the first person that shares the exact dimensions of this on this site I will PayPal you 20 bucks for the effort. If not I will make sure to do this once I figure it out. As always you guys are an amazing help, thanks for contributing I appreciate it!
  10. Sept 1968 US 1969 model production begins. BMW 1600 VINs begin at approximately 1565738; BMW 2002 at 1662859. '02s assembled before 1 Jan 1969 are known as “first series” 1969’s, and are essentially identical to the 1968s. The post-1 January cars meet new EPA/DOT regulations that took effect on that date. These “second series” cars begin with VIN 1664761. Based on "These “second series” cars begin with VIN 1664761." and the date "Casting date is March 24(?), 1970 (“24(?)C 70”)" good chance it is a 2.0
  11. I might be wrong but I think they are identical parts sans the c channel black covers on the bars which you can remove with a little persuasion. Punched on the same press too. The only discrepancy I have heard of is the 2 kinds of kidney, one with 8 and one with more than 8 slats/then the tall and short side pieces. Admittedly I am new to this and might be completely wrong too.
  12. If that were the case I could BUT sadly Google Images is where those 3 pictures are from I just used them to reference the difference in the holes I have to the holes I want, this is my humble BMW 2002 front end that I am working on:
  13. hey guys, I am converting my 1974 to a 1968-1973 body style and I need to cover the large square holes then cut the smaller holes in the right place and in the right size. Has anyone done this? I am great at measuring but I do not have a 1968-1973 body style to measure. I already bought the Front Bumper Bracket Rubber Covers so I will have to be very precise. Does anyone want to help me with a pencil rubbing with measurements of where they go? I can't for the life of me think of a better way, if you have one please share. 😉 Best regards, lunarkingdom (Rick)
  14. I just realized that the front and rear end were changed to a 1974+ style from a 1969 grill and round taillights. Never seen that before, interesting build!
  15. Hey! Looking for a sunroof track (pretty sure it is the right side, picture below for reference) that does not have damage in the cable trough, mine is beautiful otherwise but it looks like the dissimilar metals (steel in the cable vs aluminum of the track) made the trough dissolve and it has grooves down half of it which will mess up my new cables when I install them.
  16. I just bought a pair on ebay a week ago in the same condition for 400usd shipped, good deal on these!
  17. A prince among men! Free knowledge with every part!
  18. I also would like to know if there is a better carb I should use in place of this one for a stock 2002 motor as this one has smog stuff on it I think and I am going to be doing a smog delete as my car is a 1974 and doesn't need any of the smog stuff that is on it. Can I just block off the smog stuff on this one or should I invest in something better?
  19. Hey! I received an extra carbourator with my 2002 that appears to be in good shape. The one that came on the motor is the same one but is in really bad shape so I want to rebuild this one. Could you guys help me identify what I have here and point me in the right direction for a complete rebuild kit for it? As always thank you for any and all help you can give me. Best regards, Rick
  20. I was under the (loose) impression that if I pull the engine I will have enough room to pull the tube out? I am with you on this but the first thing I am going to do is: a) put a n endoscope into the cylinder with the broken rocker (and the other three) to see what if any damage is in there. b) turn it over with a compression gage on each cylinder to see how the rings are doing c) check the cam for excessive wear If I have decent compression and the cam looks good, I will consider leaving the head on (if possible to replace rocker this way just waiting for Marty to let me know) and buying new timing chain/tensioner/water pump and front gasket kit then giving it a go. My carb has been sitting for years, is it better to just buy a new one or try and rebuild the carb? Much appreciated, Rick
  21. Rich, Thats the price I had to pay posting from my hammock on my boat 😉 I actually had uploaded another picture that was a jpg but did not hit insert. Good tip on the settings will change immediately. PM incoming in messages. Best regards, Rick
  22. Looking for one round red taillight insert, it is the one that does not have the flat cover over it (on the inside) as in the picture below. Two pictures below, one with the correct lens the other with it missing. Best regards, lunarkingdom (Rick)
  23. Hey guys, I am looking to put together a plan to rebuild/refresh my plain Jane 2002 motor. I am looking for guidance on what the critical items are (timing chain/tensioner/oil pump/bearings/cam/etc) and what is probably ok to use. For example I was reading about the oil pumps and someone somewhere said something like "If xxx is good those oil pumps last for 300k miles" and/or "you can rebuild the oil pump easy with xxx part". I am paraphrasing and generalizing as I still need to learn what to look for, what I need, where to get the best pricing etc from you guys. I have a motor that's dirty and been sitting for some time, it has a broken rocker arm. If I have good compression and a replacement rocker arm, what do I need to replace as I go through the motor to fix the problem? What should I plan on replacing? What should I not have to worry about? Should I just find a good head and replace it and the timing chain? I have the matching vin numbered block so this motor is just a runner. I dont want to upgrade much if anything in the performance department. I appreciate every one of you who has helped me find parts and answered my sometimes strange questions. You make this all possible. Best regards, lunarkingdom (Rick)
