  1. Thanks Carl. I've taken to the sleeve with a long flat bladed screwdriver and chisel. Looks like it's spot welded in down the sides! This is now definitely above my capability. I've taken it to an engineering mechanic who does vehicle modifications and fabrication. I've passed on all your advice regarding drilling/welding the bottom to push it out. Fingers crossed! Keep the tips coming please!
  2. I love the knowledge on this forum! Thanks Simeon and AceAndrew. The depth of the existing sleeve is a couple of inches shorter than the length of the new bilstein shock (I measured inside to the bottom of the current sleeve). Am I right in assuming there will be a fair bit more depth available once the sleeve is removed?
  3. Thanks Mike and Harold. Yes, the inner sleeve is thinner metal than the strut tube. Any idea how and where this inner sleeve is held in place? There's a definite gap between it and the strut tube but it seems to be rock solid. I'm just making absolutely sure this tube is actually removable before I have a crack. i.e. not welded at the bottom or something! Once I attack this tube, there's no going back!!! If I do successfully remove the inner tube, It will mean quite a gap between the new bilstein shock and the strut wall. Is this right? Should there be a 2-3mm or so gap around the shock and the wall?
  4. Thanks Tom. Tried the wire wheel, but still too tight. Harold, this is the outer sleeve from the original oil damper assembly. These were the early type of dampers before self-contained shocks were used. There was no self-contained strut in there. I had the same thought as you and wonder if this sleeve can be removed, but it seems absolutely stuck tight. Anyone have experience removing or dealing with this sleeve?
  5. My '74 2002tii had the original oil filled dampers in the front struts. I'm trying to replace them with new Bilstein shocks but they seem VERY tight. So tight I can't get them in! I thought removing them was supposed to be the hard part! I'm wondering if my struts are incompatible with the new shocks. Does anyone know? From my attached pics can anyone tell me if the struts are supposed to have the inner sleeve mine have? The very top of the inner sleeves seem to be messed up a little bit, but the rest of the tube is in perfect condition. I've tried pulling back the tops to allow the new struts in, but it doesn't seem to be enough. I can only get them in a couple of millimetres.
  6. Thanks Nick. Rest assured I'l be replacing in pairs (in fact all four corners). Simeon, thanks. I've decided to order 4 Bilstein HD shocks to go with my H&R sport springs so fingers crossed the shocks fit inside the struts! I can't work out why there's precious little on the internet about these old oil-filled struts. Very grateful for this forum and the knowledge base it brings! Cheers,
  7. I've just discovered my 2002 has these early oil filled struts. There's precious little I can find on the internet about them! I need to find a strut refill cartridge that will fit, but googling the Boge part number went nowhere. Can anyone please help?
  8. HI oz_tom, Your "Blacky" 2002 is an absolute inspiration. I've stared at pictures of your car for many months before recently purchasing 15" BBS RS's (6.5", 32 offset) for my 1975 Black 2002tii. Any thoughts on harshness of ride on your 195/45? I'd go the next profile up (195/50) but the wall-size seems to look just a bit too big for my taste especially on my narrower rims which I presume will make them sit a little taller? Do you happen to have any more shots of your mate's green 1602? I've searched but can't find a better angle to see what his 185/45's look like on the front given his wheels are the same 6.5" width as mine. Thanks for all your valuable input on this thread!
  9. Looks great! To me the tire doesn't even look stretched, so looks like a very nice solution. I figure narrower tires are only going to help steering weight too given many of us fit steering wheels smaller than stock. Hopefully my tire guy won't have an issue with fitting extended studs to my hubs. Is it difficult? Cheers.
  10. Nice job, and thanks for replying so quickly. I'm no expert at all, but figured 185 might be a little narrow for 7" rims. Did the 185 tires need to be stretched out a little? Any problems? Did you have enough wheel nut length to bolt on the wheels ok with the 10mm spacers? Thanks again nicktahoe. You're an inspiration! Do you have any more photos? I'd love to see them!!! Sweet looking car.
  11. Super looking wheels! I'm looking at a set of RS047's for my 2002tii. How do they fit? Did you need to use spacers or have you had any issues with rubbing or clearance?
  12. Can this trim be restored? Mine's a bit tired and tatty but I'd rather not have to buy a whole new set. Napes said the trim is actually anodised aluminium. Who does this sort of work? Is it expensive?
  13. I'm hoping to get some advice please. I've purchased both the rubber seals and chrome inserts to replace my old front and rear windscreen rubbers/chrome inserts. Can I just pull out the old rubbers/inserts and install the new ones? Or do I need to pull the entire windscreen out to get the job done? My local window installer told me over the phone I need to take out the windscreen just to get the new rubber in. Is that right? i.e. A job for the experts? Cheers.
  14. Are these still available? If so, what is the ordering procedure? I have a '75. Kind regards.
  15. As per this thread... http://www.bmw2002faq.com/topic/135970-interior-door-panel-chromemylar-strip-kits/
  16. Thanks John! Impressive speed of response for a thread that's 2 years old! My doors are actually in good shape. I just need the chrome insert trim bits (the 2 straight chrome lines across the vinyl). Do you know if they are available anywhere?
  17. Are these still available? I have a '75. How do I organise this?
