  1. Do you have the pushrod to a clutch master cylinder? This the part that attaches the master cylinder to the clutch pedal via a bolt and bushings.
  2. Thanks for the suggestions. The carb does not have an electric idle cut off solenoid and it has an electronic ignition system, electric choke, and mechanical advance on the distributor. I checked for vacuum leaks and the carb nuts but did not find anything amiss. I will check the choke and the jets.
  3. I am having a problem with my 1976 ‘02. Last week when I was driving, it suddenly would not idle although I could keep it running by holding the accelerator pedal down. I suspected a vacuum leak and replaced a very old brake booster hose with a new one. The check valve seems to stick a little but otherwise was functioning (preventing backflow). When I tried to start it, it would not idle at all but later maintained a higher idle (around 1500-2000) when I adjusted the idle screw on the carburetor (Weber 38). The in-dash vacuum gauge fluctuated slowly between 10 to 15 inches. I worked on it some this weekend and here is what it is doing now. I can get it to start by holding the accelerator pedal way down but it won’t go above 1000 rpm, even with the pedal completely down, until it warms up some. Interestingly, the vacuum gauge shows it is drawing 0 inches. After it warms up a bit, it can be reved higher and vacuum gauge will read steady around 15 inches. When it is fully warm, I can get it to maintain an idle at 1500 rpm and the vacuum will hold steady at 18 inches and occasionally at 21 inches. Normally, it draws 20 inches at idle. I drove it down a residential street for about a mile and it seemed to have normal power when moving. Any ideas what might be causing this?
  4. The short hose from the thermostat to the water pump bypass sprung a leak while driving to work this morning. I would like to repair it as soon as possible. It is a simple hose and I was thinking about replacing with generic radiator hose. Does anyone know the diameter of the hose? An alternative would be to wrap it with duct tape and order a replacement. How long do you think this temporary fix would last? Thanks.
  5. I have a 1976 '02 that was repainted in September. The sunroof opened and closed just fine before the car was repainted and I cracked it open a few times after the repainting. However, it is firmly stuck now. I tried putting moderate pressure on the sunroof handle and the sunroof still won't budge. Any thoughts as to what is causing the problem and how I can correct it? Thanks.
  6. Thanks. I have been locking the door using the key but without wearing a glove. I understand that the owner's manual shows a glove but I believe that by the 1976 model, the design had been modified so that it became possible to lock the door holding the key in a bare hand.
  7. I was curious whether it is possible to close the doors with the door locks engaged on an 02. If I push the lock button down on mine, and close the door with the door handle button pushed down, it just clunks when the locking mechanism hits the the latch and won't close. Am I missing something, or is this just another feature of German engineering? Thanks.
  8. After a bit of thinking, I figured out the voltage problem might be due to dirty battery connections so I cleaned the terminals. The voltage went up to the normal range (duh). I bought some alligator clips and made some test cables and hooked the stereo up to the battery as you suggested. It started working. Thanks.
  9. Perhaps I am missing something obvious but I have a perplexing stereo installation problem. I am trying to install a newer Chrysler stereo with a CD player but have also tested two Sony CD stereos and older BMW and Kenwood cassette players. I have tested the ground, always-powered, and switched wires and get about 13 volts on the always-on and switched wires when the engine is running. The always-on wire runs about 5 volts when the engine is off. When I hook up the wires, the stereos do not show any of the information on the LCD screens such as mode or tuning. I can get the Chrysler, BMW, and Kenwood stereos to illuminate. The Sony stereos do nothing. I am hooking up the ground and powered wires properly an the fuses are intact. Anyone have an idea of why I can't get the stereos to work? Thanks.
  10. Another way to make a 17mm member to use for removing the drain plug is to purchase a bolt with a 17mm head and two or three nuts to match. The bolt should be short enough to fit within the space between the transmission and tunnel but long enough to put the nuts on with a little room to spare. Put the nuts on the bolt and place the bolt head into the plug. When you torque the inner nut, the nuts will eventually jam and enable you to remove the plug.
  11. I am looking for a door lock cylinder. Thanks.
  12. Worked on the 1976 02 this weekend including getting the door panels off so I can get the locks rekeyed. Found two parts in the car that I did not recognize. The black rubber piece in the foreground was found stuffed in the engine compartment near the firewall on the driver's side. The metal assembly in the background was found resting on the bottom of the inside of the passenger-side door. Any idea what these parts are and what they do? Thanks.
  13. I am progressing on several fronts with my 1976 02 and am getting ready to get the heater controls to work properly. The prior owner paid a local garage quite a bit of money to replace the heater fan. The fan makes a strong whirring sound so I think it is working fine. The problem is that hardly any air flows from the defroster vent or the footwell vents. The defroster control lever will slide all the way from "off" to "defrost" but springs back to a resting position that is about halfway between "off" and defrost." The temperature control lever will slide all the way to "warm" but stops about 1/2" from the "cold" position. The footwell flap control slides freely but doesn't seem to have any effect the flow of air into the footwell. The fan control lever seems to work okay although the high setting takes effect as soon as the lever is moved slightly right from the "off" position. I am looking for some suggestions as to what is causing the problem and what I will need to do to fix it. I am hoping for a simple solution such as rapping on the dash while saying "otto" backwards three times. I know it will likely be more involved. Thanks.
  14. I recently put in a pair of seats from a 1987 911 to replace the severely deteriorated seats that came with my 1976 BMW 2002. It was a fairly easy modification. For each seat I made a simple bracket from 3-inch wide steel bar stock with holes drilled to attach one side to the outboard mounting frame on the BMW and holes drilled to fit the Porsche seat slider rail. I drilled a hole on the inboard seat rail so that it could be bolted onto the inboard mounting frame of the BMW. I primed and painted the brackets to make them look a little nicer because they have to be bolted over the carpeting. I also removed the slider adjust levers in the 2002 by prying the black tab off the end of the lever using a pair of screwdrivers on either side of the tab and then unfastened the screws holding the rest of the adjuster. Also, I unbolted the seat belt attachments on the 911 seats and use the one on the BMW because the stock belts won't fasten into the Porsche attachments. The seats work fine although I think a downside is that the high backs result in losing some of the rearward visibility that I really appreciate in the car.
  15. I am looking to install a stereo in my 1976 BMW 2002 with the long console. I was thinking about getting a used OEM stereo from another brand such as Chrysler or Mazda. Has anyone else done this and what was their experience with the stereo fitting. I ask because a lot of OEM stereos are larger than DIN or double DIN.
  16. My car came with this wheel which needs a horn button. It has nine attachment screws which is what Moto Lita and LaCarra use. However, I believe the Moto Lita wheels take either 3.5 or 4.5 inch buttons and the diameter of the hole in the wheel of my car is 3-1/16 inches (78 mm). The is no manufacturer's name on the wheel but it does say "Made in France." I sent the photo to LeCarra and was told they don't think it is a LeCarra wheel. Any thoughts regarding who made the wheel or where I could get a button that fits? Thanks.
  17. My project (1976 BMW 2002) is coming along nicely, especially because of the information in the archives. My car has some perplexing PO issues and on my list is the lack of an antenna. The driver's side pillar has some sealed holes sloppily covered by paint where the former antenna was apparently located. The bottom set of holes consists of a pair of former screw holes and apparently did not have a larger central hole for the antenna cable. So my question is, how is the cable installed in the typical 2002? I can get a pillar mount antenna and drill a hole to pass the cable through the pillar. Upon examination, I could not find a ready way to access the space within the pillar from inside the passenger compartment or the engine compartment. Will the cable magically appear somewhere if you just keep on pushing it into the hole or does something else have to be done such as removing the dash (ugh)? Sorry if I seem a little dense at times. These 2002s are new to me. On the plus side, my car passed Oregon DEQ last week with its Weber 38/38. The standard for CO is 2.5 percent and and the car meet it with room to spare at 2.4991 percent. Thanks.
  18. Take a pair of screwdrivers or other kind of rods and place one on each side of the black handle where it meets the shaft of the adjuster. Lever the screwdrivers off of the base member so that the screwdrivers are pushing upwards on the bottom end of the black handle. The black handle should slide right off.
  19. Thanks for the information. I understand the situation now. Could you tell me what the anti-vibration grommets look like so I can check to see whether they are missing? I appreciate your help.
  20. I have a question about door lock knobs. I recently bought a 1976 BMW 2002 that has had a lot of PO modifications. The door lock knobs are thin vertical plastic cylinders that barely extend past the opening in the at the top of the door panel when the doors are unlocked. I am assuming they aren’t original but I don’t know what the original knobs look like. When I pulled one off, I saw that it is press fit onto the wire with a small detent to help secure it. I would like to replace the knobs with something longer and preferably with a slight flare at the top to facilitate a better grip. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
  21. I have a 500c as well. Just bought a 1976 2002 in Inka that I am working to get more respectable. When it's done, hopefully I will put a roll of Tri-X through the Blad and post some photos.
  22. Steve, Thank you for your response. It was very helpful. I have heat now in my 02. I had to turn it on via the Land Rover Series I method (open the hood and open the valve directly) and still don't have defrost, but I am on my way to figuring out this part of the beast.
  23. I wanted to introduce myself and ask a couple of questions. I just bought a 1976 BMW 2002 as a project. It needs work in quite a few areas but I got a lot of my questions answered by searching previous posts. Some of my remaining questions may sound kind of naive but I figure it is better ask them now. 1. Where is the best place to place a floor jack to lift the rear wheels. Is it under the differential? 2. The idle speed varies across quite a range each time I stop, even after the car has warmed up. It can range anywhere between 600 to 1800 rpm. The idle speed holds steady while stopped (i.e., it doesn’t fluctuate). The car has an aftermarket Weber carb. Any suggestions regarding how to correct this? 3. What kind of brake fluid is compatible with the system? I don’t want to put in the wrong kind if there is a bad type. Are any brands particularly recommended? 4. There is no heat coming out of the heater vents inside he car. The fan control works fine and the blower apparently was recently replaced. The control for the heat/defrost setting can only be moved midway and doesn’t stay there. Any suggestions on how to get heat and front defrosting back? 5. There is a spot of rust through on the driver’s side floor. Is there any particular way I should be approaching this repair? Thanks for your help.
