I did the points-coil wire thing. Rather than put a switch in series, one side of the switch goes to the points-coil wire, the other side of the switch goes to ground. Thus when the switch is "on" the points are grounded.

+1 cleaning battery terminals. Years ago I found some gooey goop "in there" .... no idea what it was. After a thorough baking soda/water soak and cleaning of the terminals, no more problem.

I like the big bumpers. In 1980 during rush hour I got tapped on the back end, no real damage.
But I really like 'em in the garage: a great stepladder to reach up into the rafters.
And they are great for camping, I made a couple of tables that use the bumper as the front support.
