After I'm done filling the tank I put the gas cap back on. I then use the gas station's windshield squeegee thingie and swab down with lots of water the spillzone on the bodywork below the gas cap. This rinses off the gasoline, thus the paint isn't bothered.

achman,
for curiosity: you say the car has a CA plate .... does the current owner know all the history of the vehicle: original owner, where in CA it came from, how long it's been in New York, etc etc .

IMHO it is the fuel pump. Exactly what happened to me over several years, it was dragging and dragging, finally got to the point where it seized and popped fuses.
I could not find a real-deal year-correct new tii pump. Tried a rebuilt, no joy.
Here is the Recommended Fix Method: install a 5 series pump. I did, easy to do, no problems since.

hmm, you've only had the car 1.5 months. So perhaps you don't know how many miles on clutch, et al, drivetrain components ??
Thinking big picture & long-term, this could be the perfect time to replace "everything:" the whole clutch, throwout bearing, trans, guibo, motor mount at the back of the transmission, shifter stuff ..... it is already all apart, re-install all new.
In other words, bite a large financial bullet and set yourself up for years and years of worry-free driving.

+1 wheel bearing adjustments.
+1 steering box adjust.
and make sure there is lube in the steering box. Mine leaked out (bad seal) and the front end felt funny. Lube topped up, no more problem.

yep, my pal has a 1957 Triumph TR3 .......
SO, to continue the lesson: those parts are all about vibration isolation.
"Logical" Question: #11 is open at the top (a small hole). Are there any rubber conditioning products which a person can trickle inside #11 which will make those rubber pieces swell up and again "seat" tightly ?? I've looked around but haven't found anything.
Cheers and Thanks,
Carl

On another thread Mike and Bill were talking about the gear shift lever and how the "metal surround" (#11) will spin on #10 when the internal rubber gets old and shrinks. (mine has done that for years, no problem shifting).
http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/t,380608/
SO, for a learning lesson: why are all those parts in there ?? Vibration isolation ?? Why not just JB Weld #10 & #11 together ??

+1 what Mike says above.
-- replace the guibo. You'll get years & years of worry-free driving.
-- clutch master & slave cylinders & hoses are inexpensive (not difficult for a home project if you're interested). Again, worry-free driving.
-- shifter stuff: as long as the transmission is out ......

just find a local guy who does brake shoe relining .....
I did that on the rear drum brakes of my motorcycle. He charged me $20 out the door to glue on new lining.

3 loud booms and violent lurching ..... and you keep on gathering speed and upshifting ??
I like your sense of optimism !!

I bought a set 5 or 6 years ago off Ebay ..... haven't worked up the energy (yet) to install 'em, still got lots of lining to burn through.

If it "just stopped running" I'll say ignition something or other.
The "pop" symptom could add fuel delivery as a problem, but I wouldn't guess so. I always get "spluttering then quit" with fuel delivery failure.
If you have a tii, could be the drive belt between crankshaft and Kugelfisher pump. That broke on me a couple of years back while cruising on the freeway and the symptom was "it just quit running" and acted like ignition/electrical.

Pierre,
Good Job !!

I have a 120V arc welder that doesn't quite get it done. It has 220V capability but I haven't yet made up that long extension cord from the kitchen.
I have a 220V at my dad's house .... THAT is the way to go !!

finally worked up the energy to adjust the valves. Even had energy left over to clean the spark plugs, since removing the spark plugs is Step 1 for valve adjusting (in Carl's book, that is).
Anyway, we had an early thread on the topic:
http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,380220
SO, what I wrote in that topic was that you can adjust 2 valves with one setting of the camshaft.
Here's a chart I made up to show what 2 valves can be adjusted .....

Small gathering today. A small amount of rain in Chino. Hot coffee and pastries aplenty. Lunch was fantastic.
Of great interest: learned about Tour D'Orange, held on the morning of this past January 1st. Harry and his friend Frank were there and participated with their BMW's. TONS of incredible cars to be seen !! They had lots of pictures. Here's a YouTube .....
Here's some info websites:

Of particular interest: Harry and Frank did not see a single 2002.

+1 ndog.
I would imagine the fuel gauge is switched, don't need it "on" when you can't see it.
