  1. Paul - Please make me a fair offer and take me out of my misery so I won't feel guilty about not waiting for the circlers to finish circling . :-) If there are any other tii parts you're in need of, let me know.
  2. Yes, there's a good story behind that! In 2011, a valve stuck in my 02. I had the car towed to Autoworks and after considering just buying a rebuilt head, decided it might be nice to have a fresh engine. My car was a tii clone anyway, so no blasphemy. An rebuilt engine was for sale on the FAQ by a member, and after speaking with Carl at La Jolla Independent to confirm the extent of that rebuild, and seeing the invoice, I bought the engine crated by the seller. It had been in storage in San Diego for two years and when it arrived in Bozeman, Tim, AutoWorks owner, examined the engine and found some rust. He didn't like that and didn't want to take responsibility. He advised me not to use the engine without tearing it apart first and confirming the rebuild. So I contacted the seller and he offered some fair financial compensation to do the additional work, and with that, Tim tore the engine apart, sent any questionable parts out for refinishing, used the parts he needed or preferred cosmetically. I had previously had my car's K-Fish rebuilt by Carl at Pacific Fuel Injection, so we used that pump in the rebuild. A few months later I drove off with a rebuilt engine that sounded and drove like new. It was a more expensive process than it should have been, but I've enjoyed the car thoroughly. Last month I sadly said goodbye to "Bluey," as we prepare to move to the UK. The generator / alternator is still available for sale, though I'm waiting for a few people who are circling to decide. Photos below along with one of it as it came from La Jolla Independent.
  3. Thanks. While I have you on the line, how does one come up with fair asking prices when parting out? I can't find any recent prices for a Kugelfisher pump (in what I believe is very good condition) Also looking for a fair ask on the NLA intake manifold parts - Most of the transactions on the FAQ are behind the scenes via PM. Unless something is available new on RealOEM or there's a recent eBay auction, it's challenging to figure out a fair price to ask (or offer) for NLA parts. I guess that's not new news. :-)
  4. Thank you very much Paul. Much appreciated! I see it's NLA. I need to come up with a fair asking price as I part out this engine.
  5. I'm trying to figure out what this throttle linkage part is called and I can't find it on the Mobile Traditional site (or anywhere else for that matter). There are no numbers or markings on it and now I'm starting to think it was fabricated by a repair shop rather than being an original part. Can anyone identify it? http://www.bmwmobiletradition-online.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=2583&mospid=47141&btnr=35_0201&hg=35&fg=10
  6. Price:: 1.00 Location: : Bozeman MT See my prior posts about the disassembled tii engine I'd prefer to sell in one deal and will deliver to Seattle this weekend if I get close to my price. If I don't, I wil probablyl part it out. I am asking $2,000 for what is a nearly complete tii engine (minus one piston and a non-tii block). The parts are NOT from one engine. They are from two different tii engines that was turned into one engine. Both engines had been rebuilt - one a few years ago had zero miles on it when I bought it from an FAQ member. He'd had it built at La Jolla Independent, but never installed it in his car. The other had about 40K on it after a rebuild by Road Rockets in the late 90's. Anyway, I had a request for close-ups of the E12 head and K-Fish pump with numbers showing. Here are those photos. Many other photos are in my earlier post. If you are interested in a specific part, PM me and I can send you a closeup photo of the part(s) you'd be interested in if I part it out.
  7. Price:: 1.00 Location: : Seattle Pick it up and take it all for $1,500 or I'm parting it out. The parts are from two different rebuilt 2002tii engines. The block is from a '75 2002 engine. As you can see, most of the parts are really clean. 1/2 the parts are from a tii engine rebuilt by La Jolla Independent for customer Kurt Bicknell. I purchased this engine from Kurt in 2011. It had zero miles on it following the LJI rebuild. The other parts are from my 74tii with ~40,000 miles since it was rebuilt by Road Rockets in Northern CA in 1999. I had my car's engine rebuilt in 2011 by Tim Fountaine of AutoWorks in Bozeman (www.theautoworksinc.com). These are all the spares left over from the two engines merged into one. They have been in dry storage. I sold my tii last month, we will be moving soon, and don't have a need for the parts now. The block is stamped 2374573 (see photo), which is a '75 2002 block. All the other parts should be original tii parts. I'm happy to send closeup photos of parts and provide serial numbers. I will do my best to communicate to you accurately what I have. I would prefer to sell ALL the parts to one buyer who could pick them up, but if you are interested in the parts, PM mee or email me - ron@wildjoescoffee.com
  8. "Care to share the tii engine numbers?" Sure. The parts shown are a combination of two engines. The engine block I have now is # 2374573 (originally from a '75 2002). The manifold is a Tii. I have both a set of plastic runners and aluminum runners. Backstory - A valve stuck in my '74 (Fjord Blue car pictured) and I decided it was time for a rebuild. I purchased a rebuilt tii engine from Kirt Bicknell (La Jolla Independent did the rebuild - it's the engine pictured on the stand). Bozeman's Tim Fountain, owner of Autoworks, disassembled both engines and rebuilt a tii engine for my car using parts from both engines. I recently sold my car locally. What I am selling are all the parts leftover from that project. It should be a complete engine, less a piston and a few gaskets.
  9. Photos of the 2002 engine block were attached to my post a few days ago.
  10. Price:: 2000.00 Location: : Bozeman, MT Please see followup posts .
  11. Clarifying: the two engines shown are the two tii engines we merged into one during a rebuild. The rebuild was done by Tim Fountain of AutoWorks in Bozeman. One engine had been rebuilt by La Jolla Independent in San Diego a few years ago. It was still crated and had zero miles on it after the LJI rebuild. The other engine was in my '02 when I purchased it. My car had 160k miles on it at the time. The engine had been rebuilt by Road Rockets in San Rafael CA in the late 90s with 120k miles on it. The parts I am seling are all the components left after the merger of the two engines. They have been in dry storage for the past 4 years. The engine block itself is in excellent condition, but is not an original tii block. It was manufactured for in October 1975 stamped VIN 2374573. My direct email is ron@wildjoescoffee.com of you want more information.
  12. Price:: 2000.00 Location: : Bozeman MT I'm moving to London with my family in June and need to clear out the garage. I have a 99.5% complete but disassembled 2002tii engine. They are all the parts we didn't use in an engine rebuild. We started with two complete engines, as pictured, took them apart, and reassembled one engine. These are all the remaining parts. Before parting out, I'd like to sell the entire engine to one person. Happy to clarify individual components. I'm asking $2,000 for everything. If that's too much, please feel free to make an offer. Prefer someone who is near Bozeman and can inspect everything, but I might be able to deliver to Seattle or Portland if there's a solid deal. Ron Gompertz Bozeman MT
  13. Vin matching - Very true. But sadly, my old engine isn't the original. My car is a 1975 2002 and at some point, a former owner "converted" it to a Tii "clone" with a tii engine, clock, fuel pump, etc. I debated about the pros and cons of going back to a stock, correct 2002 engine, but when Kurt contacted me about his newly rebuilt engine, I decided to go with another Tii powerplant. Of course now I'm in the All too common position of having far more invested in the car than it's market value, along with the stigma of having a "fake" Tii. It would be nice to match my old Tiii engine with it's original chassis, but I suspect it's long been flattened.
  14. My shiny newly restored 1974 Tii engine arrived today from Southern California, packed securely in a rolling wooden crate hand built by 02Forum member and seller Kurt Bicknell. Thanks Kurt! And thanks to Carl and the guys at La Jolla Independent for doing about beautiful complete rebuild. Even the stock air cleaner is pristine. If all goes well, my new engine will be installed just in time for Bozeman's annual "Cruisin' on Main Street" car show. Next, I need to figure out what to do with the old Tii engine: Rebuild it, save it for a spare, part it out, or sell it complete "as is" and let someone else do the rebuild.
  15. Thanks for the photo of the air cleaner with the brace installed. That's a big help. I'm looking forward to installing the nice shiny powder coated air filter that came with the rebuilt engine I bought. Restoring my 02 is as close as I'll likely to get to time travel, and I am prioritizing stock over higher performance, provided I'm not hurting street drivability.
  16. Yep, that's where my car is now and where I got the estimate of 20 hours for the engine R&R. With the mysterious and sudden departure of Bill Martin, my old school, BMW factory trained mechanic and friend who loved 02s and under charged me $30 an hour to work on mine, Auto Works is the next best option. But Bill let me work on my car in his garage, and provided mentoring / tech support when I needed help. Now Tim Fountaine @ AutoWorks is the only real game in town with experience working on 02's. He has a very good rep among local Volvo, MB, Land Rover, Jag, Porsche owners and is consequently both expensive and in demand, with 4-8 weeks average just to get your car in for an appointment. Im confident he'll be doing a great job on my car and I will report back on the cost of the R & R if anyone is interested.
  17. Yes Ken, I believe that's what he was referring to. And much appreciation for your professional perspective c.d. Here's a little more detail: I had my car towed in to the garage after the engine started making a racket following a beautiful drive. I asked the garage to remove the head and they found #3 exhaust valve stuck with the valve seat ring separated from the head just 600 miles after a head rebuild. With the head off, we could see the block and pistons are in good shape, except for a slight ridge in #3 cylinder wall. A top and lower end rebuild was recommended. But given his estimate of time and cost to rebuild, I decided installing a newly rebuilt engine from outside my area would be a more cost effective and reliable solution in the long run. I asked if he'd work on time and materials, since I thought 20 hours seemed high for an engine install. He said I wouldn't benefit by that and it would cost more. "if you want us to just bolt in the engine, we can do that too. But you're not going to be happy." This garage is the only game in town for Porsches, Land Rovers, Volvos BMW and Jags (none of which have factory dealers near here) and we usually wait 4-6 weeks just to get an appointment. It's a supply and demand issue (Not to mention snow pack on the roads from December to May).
  18. Thanks Richard, Fred, Bob S, jgerock, Very helpful suggestions. The going rate here in Bozeman is $90 an hour. AutoWorks estimated 18 hours. Tim, the owner, knows 02s, and he serviced my car before I bought it from the prior owner. Another local garage specializing in VWs and other European cars, estimated 15 hours, but they hadn't worked on an 02 in years. For reference, I've attached a photo of my old Tii engine with the head and K-Fish removed. There's a fair amount of cleanup work in the engine bay to bring it up to the next level. Brake lines, booster, master cylinder and those funky orange relays.
  19. The engine coming out of my car is also a Tii engine. It was installed by a prior owner sometime in the 1980's and the head was rebuilt in 1999. I struggled a bit with the decision about going with another Tii engine for my "fake" Tii, but the quality of the rebuilt engine I'm putting in made the decision easier. The shop that I'd like to have remove and install the engine is the one and only shop within 500 miles of here that has Tii experience, and it's not worth the cost of trailering the car long distance to save some $ on nstallation. I want to support my local European car garage, and they have a great reputation for quality work and honesty. But I still want to do a reality check on what typical engine swap takes / costs.
  20. I've purchased a newly rebuilt Tii engine from Kurt Bicknell, a terrific and responsible 02FAQer. The engine was rebuilt by Carl and crew at La Jolla Independent. It's a complete engine (K-Fish, injectors, manifolds, starter, distributor, etc - see photo) so I'm hoping for few hiccups. The crated engine should arrive here in a few days, and I'm excited to have my car back on the road soon. I know some of you routinely pull and install an engine in less than an hour. I've also heard it's a 15 - 20 hour procedure at a cost of $1,300 to $2,000. at a qualified garage. While I know I should do the install myself, I'm going to have it done professionally. Can anyone tell me what is the "flat rate" for removal and reinstallation of a complete 02 engine at a commercial garage? Is there an "official" source for determining the flat rate hours for the R &R? As an alternative to flat rate, what is average cost for the R & R operation? Ignoring other variables such as engine compartment cleaning, refreshing, painting. Other than putting in a new clutch, what other preventative maintenance items should I consider having done while the engine is out?
  21. Thanks! Helpful information. 325 lbs for weight of the Tii engine (plus shipping crate). Regretfully, the post about your shipping company is an hour too late. I pulled the trigger on a shipping order with a freight broker. Yes, residential lift gate service adds about $75 to the cost. Instead of class 85, the dispatcher categorized the engine as class 70 because it's a complete rebuild, dry of fluids and hasn't been run since the rebuild. The engine is mounted on an engine stand and well packed in a crate with lockable casters. The surprise in he shipping process was trying to get insurance coverage. Because it's a residential pickup, and the value of the engine is about $3600, the freight broker couldnt offer insurance beyond 10 cents a lb. So I guess I'll be praying it arrives here in the same condition it leaves.
  22. Yes... it'll fit! Got the answer I wanted to hear from Top Performance: It "fits fine with the stock Tii Air Filter housing in place…Our pipe and filter upgrade is just a nice performance option but you can retain the stock if you want. Thank you" Steve Nelson President TEP Inc. dba Top-End Performance http://www.topendperformance.com 7452 Varna Ave N.Hollywood CA 91605 818 764-1901 e-mail: topend@racetep.com
  23. I'm buying a complete Tii engine from Southern California, and have to have it shipped to Montana, but in order to get an accurate shipping quote, I need to know the approximate weight. Does anyone know what an engine weighs, give or take? (I'll have to add 75-100 lbs for the shipping crate.) Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable engine / crated freight shipping company?
  24. I didn't see info about air filter compatibility on High Performance's website. I've emailed them to ask, and expect their answer tomorrow, but I was hoping to hear direct experience from Tii owners who own the HP brace. It looks like the Ireland Engineering brace is the better solution.
  25. I've been offered this stock, freshly powder coated Tii air cleaner (photo #1,3,4) and it would look so pretty in my engine bay. But I'm not sure if I'll be able to use it. Can anyone tell me if a stock Tii air cleaner fits when a Top End Performance front strut tower and engine brace is installed? I currently have Top End's "elbow" air cleaner in my car (photo #2).
